Summary

It was June 1916 when Sergeant Boots Adams of the Royal West Kents, together with his men, was billeted on the Descartes farm in Northern France. It was a short break from the turmoil and horror of the trenches, and Boots and his men, in return for their free billeting, were to help the farmer in his fields. It came as something of a surprise to discover that the land was being managed by a young French war widow, Cecile Lacoste, and, to the distant sound of guns, a brief wartime friendship flared between Boots and Cecile. The friendship was cut brutally short when, once more, the West Kents were called back to the trenches and Boots suffered an injury that was to take him home to London, to Sammy and Chinese Lady, and all the valiant cockney friends of Walworth who were to help him through the darkest period of his life. It was to be many years before Boots' friend, Miss Polly Simms, visiting the old battle haunts of France, stumbled once more upon the Descartes farm, and the memories of the past were rekindled.

Loved this step back in time

Always wondered why the author didn’t cover the war in earlier books. This was great to fill in the gaps. At the end of this it gives the intro to book 9 which it says Is the next book but there is actually a book 8. I’m off to listen to that. Excellent narration as always

Was wondering how this would fit into the series but as always, delivered by the narrator beautifully and loved the story.

Love listening to these books

So glad Annie Albrighton is narrating these books. I love how everybody seems to be slotting into the plot. I love Polly as she always comes out with brilliant phrases.

Another successful Adams story

my favourite character in these books is Sammy, but one person I could do without is posh Polly she is poison, Chinese lady has sadly got it all wrong inviting her into the family, shame that the author didn't kill her off in Africa! Once again high praise for the narrator

Wonderful

I can’t wait for the next book for my next credit, or if Amazon are doing one of those special deals on audible, then I can download several more books in the series. It is like watching the soap opera in this place, listening to us and has become very much part of the family. I’m just love hearing what’s going to happen next

just brilliant!

yet again a great story and very interesting branch from the main characters but at the same time keeping them all in the picture. I just wish you could get them in the plus catalogue as they're addictive.

Superb!

I have listened to all of this series up to this point and was a little confused at being presented with a trip back in time for no apparent reason. Oh my goodness, how I underestimated the author! This was probably my most favourite book so far and gives so much background colour to Boots and his family. I truly loved every minute of this story and lay awake listening to it well into the night and far past the time I should have gone to sleep. Once again, the characterization was brilliant, the story plotting was so clever and the narration, as always, superb. This read like an exceptional gem in the midst of a wonderful series. I look forward to moving on to book 8 and hope I learn more of Eloise.
