About this listen

Ellen Wood’s sensation novel of 1861 found immediate popularity on its first publication. Its themes of infidelity and double identity attracted a wide range of readers, from the Prince of Wales to Joseph Conrad.

Lady Isabel Carlyle leaves her husband and children for the aristocratic Francis Levison, who, as it turns out, has no intention of marrying her. Having been disfigured in a train accident, the unrecognizable Isabel then takes up the position of governess to her own children in the Carlyle household, with tragic consequences.

Why had nobody told me about this author!? I devoured this and definitely will read/listen to more from this author. Outstanding story and characters- hard to remember when this was written as fresh in its content.

Excellent

What a fabulous & riveting read. Not an author I knew & decided upon as a whim but what a treat. Definitely one to rival one of my favourite authors, Wilkie Collins. Interesting story, narrated very well & delivered beautifully. If you like a period drama then this one comes highly recommended.

A classic!

This story is written to such a high standard, with such depth and complexity that I had to constantly remind myself it was not a Dickens!
