About this listen

The first book to tell the full story of the COVID-19 pandemic, from an NHS doctor working inside hospitals to save lives and combat the virus on the front line. This audiobook features additional questions and answers with the author, Dr Dominic Pimenta, providing even further expert insights.

On the eighth of February, Dr Dominic Pimenta encountered his first suspected case of coronavirus. Within a week, he began wearing a mask on the tube and within a month, he was moved over to the Intensive Care Unit to help fight the virus.

Duty of Care is the first book to tell the full story of the COVID-19 pandemic from someone on the front line, working in one of the NHS's hardest hit areas. From the initial whispers coming out of China and the collective hesitation to class this as a pandemic to full lockdown and the continued battle to treat whoever came through the doors, Dr Pimenta tells the heroic stories of how the entire system shifted to tackle this outbreak and how, ultimately, the staff managed to save lives.

This incredible account captures the shock and surprise, the panic and power of an unprecedented time, and how, at this moment of despair, human generosity and kindness prevailed.

Duty of care

A real hero!
Great read to follow Dominic , an NHS Doctor through this pandemic. A real account of being on the frontline facing the changing guidelines throughout the months and also managing to set up a charity as well.
I would love to read another book by this author

Really great insight into what was happening in hospitals during the peak of the pandemic, as well as a more personal moving story. Incredibly interesting.

Heroes

I work for the NHS as a security officer. I saw it all. This covid 19 took a lot of people's life. I remember going in into critical care unit that looked like aliens have been discovered. we had to put extra layers of protection to help doctors hold a patient down as he was showing aggression towards staff. we had lack of PPE and when we did finally get them they were stolen or misplaced. Covid19 also brought in signs and 2 way systems to the hospital which has reduced people getting lost in the hospital. I agree with the author 100% on everything he said. great listen

Above and beyond

A well written honest account which needs to be heard and more importantly remembered the public need to action change the government handling is simply unacceptable, action must be taken by all of us

Everyone in the UK should read/listen to this book

We could all see it coming, but Dominic Pimenta describes the feelings/anxiety many of us had in late February/early March 2020 when we could see what was happening in Italy and that we were 2 weeks behind their death figures but our government seemed to not be acting. Dominic eloquently describes the complete chaos at the beginning of the pandemic in the UK, the horrors of working in ICU and how the UK ended up having the worst Covid-19 death rate in the world! A very disturbing listen but I feel this is a very important book telling the truth of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK and the story of one doctor who tried to make a difference. Thank you Dr Pimenta

Another perspective on the NHS / pandemic

As an NHS / medical professional who continued to work with patients F2F, AND who became a Covid patient on a ventilator…..it’s a good book that notes down some of the early memories & struggles we were faced with. Thank you

A wonderful read by a very caring doctor

Really loved this book. Author seems like a very kind doctor. This is a very important and informative read but also shows a very natural and vulnerable side of a doctor working in the frontline. I would highly recommend this book.

Aged well & great reminder of how the UK government failed its people

As an NHS professional who was fortunate enough to have a role that could be performed remotely, this was a good reminder to me of what my frontline colleagues endured throughout the pandemic – and indeed the fallout that they continue to manage. It also reminded me of how painfully obvious it was in the initial stages that we needed to put in place Measures that were already being taken elsewhere – and how the extraordinary behaviour of the UK government meant, as the author observes, that we ended up with one of the highest death rates of any country and the highest percentage death toll of healthcare professionals. The author does his best to hold the government to account and only time will tell if anyone else does the same.
Notwithstanding this, it’s not a gloomy read but a tale of how good people can achieve minor miracles in a crisis… and also from a 2022 perspective, a reminder of how great it is to be in a situation where at least we have vaccines, even if Covid has far from gone away.
