Summary
In 1980, computers were instruments of science and mathematics, military secrets and academia. Stern administrators lorded over sterile university laboratories and stressed one point to the wide-eyed students privileged enough to set foot within them: Computers were not toys.
Defying authority, hackers seized control of monolithic mainframes to create a new breed of computer game: the roguelike, cryptic, and tough-as-nails adventures drawn from text-based symbols instead of state-of-the-art 3-D graphics.
Despite their visual simplicity, roguelike games captivate thousands of players around the world. From the author of the best-selling Stay Awhile and Listen series, Dungeon Hacks introduces you to the visionaries behind some of the most popular roguelikes of all time and shows how their creations paved the way for the blockbuster video games of today - and beyond.

@ Says "Buy This Audiobook"
The Singing Happy Drunk reads you his memoirs. --more--
This is a great little history of a not-as-niche-as-you-might-have-thunk area of videogames. There's not much else to give in the way of general description to be honest, if you're looking at a book on the history of roguelikes, then you know what you're looking at.
It is such a strange subject for a book that I was actually slightly worried that this would be a load of tedious waffle, or else a thinly disguised copypaste of wiki articles and forum posts. I shouldn't have worried. This is a very competently researched and professionally presented book. The author has bothered to track down many of the personalities involved and interview them, which added a huge amount to the book, and they clearly have an understanding of what they are writing about.
Overall, due to the laser-focused title and uncommon subject matter, I have to assume that if you're looking at this book, then you're the target audience. Since you're the target audience, buy this book - you'll enjoy it.
