Summary

The moles of Duncton Wood live in the shadow of Mandrake, a cruel tyrant corrupted by absolute power.

A solitary young mole, Bracken, is thrown into leading the fight to free Duncton Wood. Only by putting his trust in the ancient Stone, forgotten symbol of a great spiritual past, can he find the strength to challenge Mandrake's darkness.

When Bracken falls in love with Rebecca, Mandrake's daughter, the moles must make life and death choices as their extraordinary search for freedom and truth begins....

Together Bracken and Rebecca will embark on moving journey that will challenge them in ways they could never have imagined. But can they save Duncton before it's too late?

Duncton Wood is the first instalment in The Duncton Chronicles, an unforgettable six-book series now widely regarded as a fantasy classic. For fans of J. R. R. Tolkien, Brian Jacques and Richard Adams' Watership Down, this is a quest into the heart of nature, the redemptive power of love and the triumph of spirit.

Beautifully written and narrated.

A story about friendship, courage, love, honour, sacrifice, belief, betrayal and adventure.
I Brought these books many years ago and enjoyed every page turning experience of these beautiful creatures lives. Now 40 years later I have had the story told to me. There’s something about listening instead of reading You don’t miss a thing as it comes alive and pulls you in. Young or old this is a beautiful written and narrated tale that will have you starting book two before the credits ends.

Not any mole

Have always appreciated Horwood books starting with Duncton Wood, hopefully the wolves and eagles will be coming soon? Thought Gareth Armstrong was a good narrator, especially with the range of voices, but had wished his “narrator “ voice had more variety in pace and tones. However, I am being picky … and he was certainly great with the Welsh. Excellent overall.

Timeless, beautiful and wise

I’ve loved these stories since my childhood and it was a joy to listen as an adult and see the many laters I missed in my youth. Beautiful.
