Summary
Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors—but it’s too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.
More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.
Their only chance at survival is an elite rescue team on the surface led by professional diver Chris Kent - Shannon’s mother and Will’s soon-to-be ex-wife - who must work together with Will to find a way to save their daughter and rescue the passengers from the sealed airplane, which is now teetering on the edge of an undersea cliff.
There’s not much time.
There’s even less air.
With devastating emotional power and heart-stopping suspense, Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family’s desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them - against impossible odds.

White knuckle listen
This is a genuine buckle up and hold your breath listen. Newman’s knowledge of the airline industry and crash protocols is superb making this a blow by blow account of what happens when disaster strikes an aircraft in flight. My heart was literally pounding more than once as the story unfolded and there are so many moments when you think it’s resolved, only to find another twist in this extraordinary tale.
Chris and Will are separated but friends and have a daughter, Shannon. Will is accompanying her to camp and their plane crashes into the Pacific a few minutes after take off from Honolulu. The parents have a backstory involving the loss of another daughter Annie and this threads through the tale. The crash details are vivid and terrifying. Truly. The panic, the debris, the desperation as passengers and crew fight to survive. Just when you think things can’t get any worse…Newman also has a great ear for dialogue and has created a bunch of plausible and diverse characters. An elderly Jewish couple, a loud mouthed know it all, a sensible female Captain, a caring flight attendant, a self centred lady obsessed with life jackets. All these people are so well rounded that you’re willing them to get through to the end. There are moments of genuine sorrow along with uplifting moments of triumph. The technical detail of the rescue operation is gripping. This is an exceptional thriller that hits every spot. I raced through it in a couple of of sittings and I’m looking forward to more from this author.

Addictive book spoiled by alternating narrators!
The story is an exciting, edge of your seat stuff which is spoiled by the alternating narrators. Whilst both narrators are superb, alone, the fact there is no structure to who reads what part, spoiled it for me. Not the male reading male characters and the female reading female characters, a character each etc. it just randomly switches between who reads it at the oddest of times.

Needs to be a movie!
This is a great story with the makings of a great 70's style disaster movie.
it has everything apart from a guitar playing nun! (but she's there in spirit)
