Teenage outcasts find common purpose to prevail.
The male and female main characters have their own stories of persecution, denegration and effectively being disowned by their fathers. Clearly stated at start of each chapter whose story we are in. They come together in an academy run by monks who are reputed to have learned to control the dragons of their sacred mountain. The abbot has requested all the families of the fragmented realm to send a young person to be tested and initiated into the rites and powers of their order. Our two main characters are of mixed parentage so scorned by the nobility and hereditary rulers.
They form friendships and alliances throughout their time of being tested and trained. They discover several secrets which make them suspicious of the senior leaders and have several times been exposed to mortal peril. There are some good guys within the monk's order who are true to the purpose and ethos. Loyalty and values are tested as well as witnessing the development of a special relationship. Satisfying resolution and can see the opening for more tales of these two without cliffhanger ending. You will have to get it to learn who is the first dragon rider.
The narrator clearly distinguished who was speaking and conveyed emotion and pace. I thought she was particularly good at the males voices. Looking forward to more of this world.
