Brilliantly quirky and funny thriller!

If you could sum up Dr Yes in three words, what would they be?

Observant, clever, humorous

What did you like best about this story?

I love this series of Colin Bateman's books. The main character is a self- centred hypochondriac who attracts trouble and then in his efforts to extricate himself from it drags both himself and those around him further into the mire. I love the dispassionate way he observes the people around him. His personality is perfect as the narrator of the story because a more socially aware character would not compute people in the way he does. As someone who knows Belfast quite well I love the references to streets and places around the city and the humour is dry and clever and real.

What does Stephen Armstrong bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Stephen Armstrong tells the tale the way the main character would tell it. His accent is easy to listen to and the story is told perfectly.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I love this series of "The Mystery Man" books. I have read some and listened to some. They are all funny page-turners/the audio book equivalent. You are left with an affection for the main characters.
I think the voice of a Northern Irish Narrator does add something to the authenticity of this audiobook.

Some really funny moments.

Listen carefully, otherwise you might miss a laugh.
I’ve actually listened to this book twice now so it must be good.

Great fun

What did you like most about Dr Yes?

I love this series by Colin Bateman; they're all well-writen and humorous - they make me smile even on a dark, dreary winter Monday morning bus ride to work.

What did you like best about this story?

The humour is the outstanding element of these books. The stories are a bit fantastical but great fun.

Have you listened to any of Stephen Armstrong’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Stephen Armstrong's narration is brilliant, he really catches the essence of the characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to this book in several chunks while travelling to and from work. It really brightens up dark winter travelling!

Clever and funny

I do love this series - nicely dark and funny, and full of fab twists and turns. The mystery man is an unlikely hero, completely flawed, often pretty unpleasant and for some reason you can't help but root for him. Not a wasted word and cleverly plotted.

A Great Laugh

I would punch the lights out of the bookshop owner with no name. Yet I lkve to read his exploits. AnotherBateman classic and superbly told by Armstong, again.

loved this book

I just love this author. He has a very vivid imagination and I learn something from each book. I learned a lot from this one. Above all you get a lot of laughs and the narrator is excellent. I am going to download another of this author's books now.

got us through the 'flu!

Husband and I downloaded the weekend before Christmas - we needed something light and entertaining to listen to as we were stuck in bed with proper 'flu! It kept us going through the worst of the fevers and shivers.

The main guy's neuroses were hilarious and loved the feisty attitude of his girlfriend.

Mystery Man does it again!

I love the mild humour in these books - contrasting with the rather gory plot lines!

Oh No

Irritating non-stop pseudo-comedy. Jokes were telegraphed in the rather patronising style of Jeremy Clarkson. This will be to the taste of some. I gave up

Urg.

This was a great story but the protagonist is so consistently unlikeable that sometimes it's hard to tell if its tongue in cheek or if the author genuinely identifies with them. I am listening to the series because they are engaging and I'm guiltily hooked, but women are very poorly represented and really, I'm only reading in the hope that the love interest boots him to the curb.
