Really enjoyed this

You can’t help but fall for Rex. The story applies to many things happening now, and what is quite possibly our future if we are not careful

Stellar, uniquely creative scifi

I really struggled to imagine how the author could retain my interest throughout the book with such a unique protagonist, but as I listened, I was completely absorbed. And much like the best scifi, wonderful, interesting themes of morality, personal responsibility, artificial intelligence, and trans humanism to name a few, were being effortlessly explored. Tchaikovsky, between this book and the Children of Time, has become my favourite contemporary scifi author. The narration was faultless and brought the characters perfectly to life.

A must read, and an absolute delight to listen to.

awesome in every way

I have no words to describe how good this book is.

The universe is perfect. Man's inhumanity to man by proxy, yet making the proxy better than themselves and breaking and subverting the shackles.

I love Rex, Honey, Bees and Dragon.

Hhe voice acting is perfect.

spectacular look into the ethics of the future

This book is spectacular, I once went to a Prfessor Robert Winston lecture about human invention and ethics. He made 1 very clear point, we as a species are now inventing things at such a rate that we dont really get to Ethic check anymore and we cant univent things it always stuck with me. This story is about that and what man does for greed or power and what that means for its inventions when we arrogantly use what nature put next to us thinking its ours. The author writes and creates a narrative which brings the loves of entities difficult to understand and makes them human enough to mean we can understand. Some of the ideas of what is.going on in the story should be a cautionary tale to us all. somehow whilst doing this it has a good pace and brings its central character to life and you root for him even though chapter 1 is him doing unspeakable things. The ark of the character is what really draws you in. Cant wait to read more.

Adrian Tchaikovsky is a good dog

Great book. Great performance.
Love his use of language and the way he makes such alien characters sympathetic.

Another great story from an accomplished writer

Adrian Tchaikovsky is a really good writer, and he knows how to tell a story in a age where great stories in this genre are thin on the ground, this is what I come to expect from Tchaikovsky, smart engaging story, well observed characters, sharp intelligence and speculation expertly weaved into the fabric of the tale. His love of animals and 'bioforms' of all kinds, and his background in Law are evident here but serve him well in the story.

brilliant

I really wasn't sure I would like this when I started.
It really came down to a lot more than bioforms and artificial intelligence though.

As well as multiple character POV there are other points of view addressed too, ethics, humanity and the bond of relationship and the price of freedom.

I loved Rex, despite the ugly atrocity of war crimes Rex really was a good dog at heart.

Very Thoughtful

The subject matter is at first quite enigmatic - difficult to interpret or understand - but over the course of the book and rather excellent narration, the story of Rex leads from a simple science fiction trope to one that's really absorbed and multilayered.

Rex is a Good Dog; and if you like thoughtful subject matter about what it means to be human or animal, this is an enjoyable book that I highly recommend

the incredible war journey

This is classic sci-fi in the sense it throws everything and the kitchen sink into the concept of enhanced animals as soldiers/weapons and the myriad of consequences that spill out from that. There's military Sci-Fi reminiscent of "aliens", there's lost group of animals like "the incredible journey", there's a debate over free will, court trials. There really is a bit of everything and a lot of heart (animal lovers especially those of dogs will find it hard not to empathize with rex). Speaking of Rex the author does an amazing job of capturing a dog's voice (or at least what i imagine an enhanced dog would sound like) as Rex never thinks exactly like a human. The narrator for Rex's chapters does an excellent job of semi growling much of the prose in what must have been murder on his voice while still evoking a range of emotions. The only minor quibble i have with the narration is that due to multiple voice actors there is a key character/villain whose voice is completely different between narrators. It would have been nice for them to have tried to hit a similar voice type at least. Otherwise this is one of the best modern science fiction reads I've encountered in a while.
