Summary

Steven Pacey reads this intriguing novelisation of a classic Fifth Doctor TV adventure.

In response to the White Guardian's warning of great danger, the TARDIS materialises on the heaving deck of an Edwardian racing yacht. But the Doctor soon discovers that this is no ordinary yacht - and no ordinary race.

Captain Striker is competing for an unusual prize: 'Enlightenment'. The crew will be lucky to reach port safely. But with such a prize, would they be lucky to win?

Steven Pacey reads Barbara Clegg's complete and unabridged novelisation of her own TV adventure, first published by Target Books in 1984.

Ditch the music (!) at the end.

Average sort of story, the final part of the trilogy. A bit disappointing, not much is made of the Guardians and no narrator could match Valentine Dyall’s delicious deep tones. Awful thumping effort at music at the end that doesn’t have anything to do with anything and has all the appeal of a school project on a bad day. Why we have to suffer that I really don’t know, silence would be infinitely better.

Straight up adaptation of the original TV show

Very little difference to the original show, but the excellent story and concise writing by Barbara Clegg, expertly delivered by Steven Pacey (Tarrant in Blake’s 7), makes for a great Doctor Who audio novel. Love it.

Enlightenment is The Choice

Narrator brought this story to elegant life, particularly the Guardians and the various Eternals. Great story 10/10
