About this listen
Don't ever let it break you.
The United Eastern States is crumbling. The fragile house of cards that Lee Harden and Angela Houston have built has begun to fall. Lee is up against a ticking clock, as he is recalled from Texas and given the last thing in the world that he wants: a promotion.
Forced into a command role, Major Harden is thrust into a sharp learning curve that goes against every instinct he's developed over years of fighting. As Lee races to find his footing in a mire of shifting loyalties and opposing goals, Safe Zones are being overrun by massive hordes of primals exhibiting strange behaviors and uncanny levels of intelligence, and Greeley is moving toward an invasion of the UES. The envoys from Canada and the United Kingdom know it - but they're refusing to take sides and give Lee the intelligence he desperately needs.
As the tides of war reach the doors of the UES, horrific secrets are revealed that will change the future of their fight for survival. Friends become enemies, and enemies become allies. But no matter what happens, no matter what - or who - he loses, Lee can't let it break him. He must remain defiant to the last.

really well performed, great story!
In-depth story telling, and the way Chris Rummel dose all the voice's in it make you believe your listening to an all cast team.

A listen worth your time
Well written, well performed. Further adventures of the characters you by this point already know and love. Lee, Angela, Sam, Abe and more. Battles hard fought some lost, most not. Lots more world building and Primals becoming something even scarier than before. Totally enjoyable and gripping adventure of what becomes of the Eastern states.

There is no breaking of the hymen
Overall just as great as the rest, but the part with the women felt more typical than original or good, and I was very disappointed hearing the old myth about broken or unbroken hymen signifying whether a woman has had sex.
There is no such thing. You can't see that. Perpetuating this myth will down the line subject women to virginity checks or worse. Stop the bullshit and get updated on actual anatomy and what the hymen is and is NOT.

Love it!
I haven’t written a review about any of the other books in this or the preceding series, and maybe I should have, but if you’re reading this then there’s a good chance you’ve had the sense to listen to those already.
I LOVE this book and all of the others before it! Are they a happy read? Most definitely not, but are they action packed, full of tension and more twists than a mountain road? Absolutely.
DJ Molles writing style allows you to follow along with ease and to be immersed at all times. He paints each scene beautifully and has an almost George RR Martin propensity to bump off any character you have developed a like for with impunity.
These books are, in my humble opinion, they best post apocalyptic stories around.
I THOROUGHLY recommend this book, but if you haven’t listened to/read the Remaining series first, PLEEEEEASE go and do so. It will give you all of the back story and you definitely won’t regret it.

Defiant
First few books where good, this one is a bit slow in the beginning. I did get lost with it a few times . But in the middle it picked up and wasn’t too bad at the end .

It's all getting a bit depressing now
I've listened to the whole series and I've always really enjoyed it but to be honest this one feels like it's kind of broke my enjoyment. I've started to kinda wish the primates all the luck in the world- hopefully they won't evolve to be such back stabbing, unsocialised creatures unable to form any kind of cohesion or future for themselves. I guess it's getting a bit walking dead - everything falls apart and things keep getting grimmer and grimmer.
By the end of the book Lee has had another three major injuries and society fares even worse. I guess I just don't see much hope in their future and at that point for me it just stops being enjoyable. It's not a plucky underdog story anymore - it's just depressing.
