Summary

Humour, plot & characters
The second in the series did feel a little long in parts but IMHO that just makes it even better value!
The characters really develop well and some of the humour is excellent- kudos to the reader as well- he really brings it to life. I’m already listening to part 3 as I write this!

Pure nostalgia
I read this as a teenager when it came out in 1996 and for all its faults it’s a cracking story. The reader is good, with a few mispronunciation errors (for eg often saying ‘snub’ instead of ‘shub’ which was a bit strange), but these don’t really detract. Really glad this classic series still has legs.

Great listen
Really brought the book to life. Some of the accents feel out of place but it helps to distinguish who is speaking. The books are long and its great that its unabridged

Strong sequel
A good yarn, the performance by Gildart Jackson, is, for me, a large part of what makes the story so enjoyable. Would have liked to have seen more of Owen's tale, but Jack and Ruby's escapades were fun.

Bit of a mess. Fun but not really good.
This feels like the without gas too many ideas and ended up writing a book almost unconnected to the first. There was some connective tissue but only in the most tenuous way. The title character was shunted out of the way quite quickly and the rest of the book was about other characters. Ideas came and went, Deus Ex Machina was pretty much order of the day and it revels in its gory details. There are even moments of slapstick in here which feel out of place and unreal.
For all of that, it’s clear that the author can write. Descriptions and prose flow well and the characters, despite being paper thin in most cases, are strangely entertaining.
It’s a mess, but like an Eaton Mess, it’s still one you’ll probably enjoy finishing all the same.
