Summary
Rome is in chaos. The empire of a mobster chief is falling apart following his death. Rivals, fearsome relatives and associates are taking up position to vie for the spoils.
With hideous murders in the streets of Rome, a lone female traveller arrives with an agenda of her own. But when her corpse is dragged out of the river bearing signs of foul play, Flavia Albia is drawn in, concerned about her fellow Briton's fate.

Great story
loved this storey linking Albia's past,with her father, and the present. Filled with details as usual, the story comes to life and gives a wonderful dangerous picture of the past in Rome.

Again Lindsey Davis produced a gripping story brought to life by Jane Collingwood's narration, so thank you and cannot wait to listen to the next book.

A joining of the two series of books.
I really enjoy Jane Collingwood narrating the Flavia Albia books. This book brought back Falco and Petronius, Maya and the annoying Milvia. It is lovely to see how their lives progress.
This was probably my favourite of all the Flavia Albia series.

Good plot
I liked the details of places and descriptions given as the story progressed

A High Point in The Series
A great listen. This novel will resonate for readers of the Falco series and the way potent villains are always a threat, though they may not always appear. In this Flavia Albia outing, Albia is more concerned with justice for a murdered woman than any historical revenge for herself, if revenge is what it might be called. For me this made the novel more interesting and Flavia Albia touchingly seeks to deal with the death of a wife. Whilst Flavia Albia continues to show some impetuosity and single mindedness, we do see more maturity too. Lindsey Davis deals well with setting out the plot and sees her deploying a middle aged Falco and Petro to support her enquiries in its dangerous phases. The ending of the novel is surprising in its creativity and the open prospect of what might follow in further novels in the series. I know that Lindsey Davis likes to write at a certain length, and only occasionally did I regret that. The performance of the audio-book is clear, easy to follow and with good variation tone and inflection, though somewhat limited in male voice characterisation. I look forward to the publication of the next instalment.

the intruption in chapter 54
chapter 54 i didn't like the voice intrupting the narative saying about the people that made the book very upset about that doesn't anybody listen before sending out

Dark and harsh
Interesting Roman details, but the focus on gangsters and organised crime makes this (for me) less interesting than some of Davis’s other books A lot of rather casual brutality.

Clever and witty story telling
There is a little bit too much going over past stories. less of a whodoneit and more of a moral tale. Enjoyable never the less.
