Summary
Amazing news is spreading like wildfire across the Scottish countryside: the most famous of all Highland bachelors, police sergeant Hamish Macbeth, is planning to marry at last!
Everyone in the village of Lochdubh adores Josie McSween, Hamish's newest constable and blushing bride-to-be. While locals think she is quite a catch, Hamish has a severe case of pre-nuptial jitters...after all, if it wasn't for the recent murder of a beautiful woman in a neighbouring village there wouldn't be a wedding in the first place.
For it was a mysterious Valentine's Day card - delivered to the victim before her death - which initially drew Hamish and Josie together in the investigation. And now, as they work side by side, they soon discover that the woman's list of admirers was endless - confirming Hamish's suspicion that love can be deaf, blind...and deadly!

Hamish as I imagined him
What made the experience of listening to Death of a Valentine the most enjoyable?
The narrators soft Highland accent was just as I imagined Hamish Macbeth to sound. He really brought the character to life
What did you like best about this story?
The story was more of the same from M C Beaton who has a winning formula and never deviates, makes very light reading/listening.
What does David Monteath bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
As I've said, the narrator is just perfect
Any additional comments?
Very light but enjoyable listending.

BETTER!
Each one of these books (which I'm reading in order) has, for me, offered more detailed, enjoyable, engrossing and BETTER reading every time! While I thoroughly enjoy the wonderful, eccentric and sympathetic characters, the somewhat convoluted plots with some quite fiendish twists, what has me on the edge of my seat is the nail-biting climax at the end of nearly every book - yes, I mean Hamish's ridiculous and seemingly doomed love life! Is he ever going to succeed with either Elspeth or Priscilla? ( how many engagement rings has he bought now?) Don't anyone DARE tell me - I 'm determined to read the rest. Each book has, for me, 'grown' Hamish, Lochdubh, his assorted friends and enemies, and last but not least his, equally lovable and eccentric animal friends, and the beautiful reading of David Montheith which seems such an essential part of the whole. Thank you so much, MC Please write lots more,

A gentle and entertaining read
The Hamish Macbeth stories are perfect relaxing escapist novels, all centred around the attractive eponymous policeman and his Highland police station in Scotland. I enjoy them as they are amusing and fairly undemanding although occasionally they do suddenly tackle a gruesome murder! If you enjoy Midsomer Murders on TV then you will enjoy all of The Hamish Macbeth novels. Good late night listening with a pleasant Scottish narrator.

Wonderful narration of an amusing Macbeth
David Monteath is a master of the Scottish brogues and gives each character, no matter how heavily featured, just a subtle difference in voice to suggest what they are like, often before they've been described.
The tale gallops along at a fair pace and the characters become so endearing the crimes seem almost secondary.
I would highly recommend listening to any other Hamish Macbeth and in fact, any title read buy Mr Monteath.
Beautiful narrative work.

Another Enjoyable Visit to Lochdubh
We see a side of Hamish we haven’t before, but sometimes some people can bring out the worst in us. Luckily the Lochdubh family are there, as always, to look after one of their own when it appears he uncharacteristically can’t look after himself. I was surprised and intrigued by this new side of Hamish. The reader is fabulous as always.

Yet another winner
I have read all of the books in the Hamish Macbeth series and loved everyone. In Death of a Valentine the storey twists one way then other keeping the reader gripped to the very end.

Good but not her best
as always with MC Beaton, she writes well and holds your interest from the start. I just didn't find this one as exciting as tge previous ones I've listened too.

My first Audible!
M.C Beaton's Hamish Macbeth is one of my favorite characters. Her books are always well written and enjoyable. Her characters are entertaining and her plots are always fresh. David Monteath has a very pleasant speaking voice and made the story very exciting. I'm hooked on Audible now.
