Summary

Forensic linguist Macy Reid is an expert on kidnapping, having been abducted when she was a child. So, she is the perfect investigator to be called in when a Denver tycoon's 11-year-old daughter is abducted - for the second time. But Macy's biggest stumbling block may be a member of her own team: Kellan Burke, the wise-cracking, rule-breaking investigator who relishes getting under Macy's skin - and who just may be the man to help her confront the demons from her past.

Skip the sex scenes

An interesting, convoluted detective tale that kept me listening. This was the fourth book in the Mindhunters series that I’ve enjoyed on the Audible Plus (free) catalogue. All well read with good variation in accents. HOWEVER, the heavy sex scenes and romance trope cliches spoil rather than enhance the narrative. I agree with other reviewers who thought the combination of sex and forensics/detection didn’t work. Thank goodness Audible has a fast forward button.

Good story line

Good storyline, kept you interested as in what was coming next.
Narrator was a bit flat at times , but preserved to the end .

Deadly Intent

I enjoyed this book very much. The excitement continued to the end. The only criticism I have is that the reader did not pause long enough when the scene and characters were about to change.

Grrrrrr!

Great book but leaving the ending so open spoiled it for me which is why I've giving it 4 out of 5 for the story.

Great story

But the patronising fake English accent , for the character Maci , was absolutely awful,
But persevered as a pretty good story,
The American throng , being a flip flop, pants being trousers , could have been misleading.

Could be so much better

The basic story was good but the narration, the sub-plot and editing were irritating. The narrator's voice didn't distinguish the characters enough and his occasional silly sing-song intonation was annoying. Regarding the sub-plot, I didn't like the continuous childish banter between the two main characters, particularly their corny innuendos which often made Macey seem a weak female. However, the most annoying aspect of the recording was between scenes. There was no obvious pause which made the scene changes merge into one another and took me a while before I was able to grasp that the characters were different and that the scene had actually changed.
SPOILER ALERT!!
I found the ending disappointing with no obvious conclusion. I guess this is to encourage the reader to read the books which follow in the series. I doubt I'll be doing that, though and certainly not on Audible. One positive, though - it didn't cost me anything as it was included in my monthly subscription and was free!

What an exciting story

That was riveting and the fact that it will continue makes it more enjoyable. The storyline made me chuckle as always at the repartee of the characters. Let’s have more

Best in the series since the original

Definitely an improvement on the last book of the series... I would say it is almost as good as Waking Nightmare. Well paced, great dialogue and more interesting characters. Even the inevitable romance that is all too ubiquitous in Brant's writing is far better presented. It feels like it develops more organically and realistically. The crime story is more engaging and although, nothing too original, it is just well delivered and interesting.

The lead is yet another tough, uber talented woman with a traumatic back story, but at this point it seems to be Brant's trademark. The other protagonist, her love interest is far more fleshed out and interesting than the ones in her previous books.
I liked that the mysterious/legendary Adam Raker actually has a large part to play in this book, unlike the other books where he only features in throw away phone calls or just appears at the end.

The best part of this book for me is the interaction between the hostage taker and the little girl he has abducted. The writing for these two is really unique and intriguing.

Needless to say, Pinchot does an amazing job (maybe not with a posh English accent though).
