Summary

The ghosts of the past come calling in a spellbinding heart stopper from the "Queen of the Northern Gothic".

After the end of her marriage, Kate Granger has retreated to her parents' home on Lake Superior to pull herself together - only to discover the body of a murdered woman washed into the shallows. Tucked in the folds of the woman's curiously vintage gown is an infant, as cold and at peace as its mother. No one can identify the woman. Except for Kate. She's seen her before. In her dreams...

One hundred years ago, a love story ended in tragedy, its mysteries left unsolved. It's time for the lake to give up its secrets. As each mystery unravels, it pulls Kate deeper into the eddy of a haunting folktale that has been handed down in whispers over generations. Now, it's Kate's turn to listen.

As the drowned woman reaches out from the grave, Kate reaches back. They must come together, if only in dreams, to right the sinister wrongs of the past.

Great story

Loved the tale of ghostly ancestral goings on, love Wendy’s books just not so keen on the narrator- it’s like having a book read by a cowboy on tranquillisers!

Well worth a listen/read

I think if I'd got the book without Audible i wouldn't have stuck with it, the first couple of Chapters were not gripping enough for me but each to their own. As Audible was available to add at around £3.50 i purchased and I'm glad I did as I would have missed out on a great novel.

Once I'd got used to the narrator who has an American style accent i only paused it for either a brew, toast or the loo and I chose a pyjamas day !!!!!
It does jump between the early 1900's and modern day and your told where you are but once your familiar with the characters it's fine.
I am going to look for more Wendy Webb novels, I like to find a new Author occasionally but do prefer to find books which are in a Series.
I think this book could make a nice t.v drama, something a little bit different.

The only reason I gave 4 not 5 stars is because I wasn't too keen on the narrator

A great American novel

Epic in its scope, Wendy Webb's novel recounts the lives and fortunes of two American families around a supernature theme. Part detective story and part ghost story, it is deftly realised. Accolades go to Ex Sand's narration. Her voice is mesmerising.

Hmmm

This is my 3rd Wendy Webb book now. I bought a number of different books at the same time to read.
As I mentioned in another review on one of her other books, I find the phrases/words/sentences are repeated a lot. I will obviously have noticed these more so when listening to them so close together one after another. but again, I'm hearing "locked eyes" and "stomach knot" a lot, I've started to predict it and roll my eyes at hearing it again.
I do have one other thing that has started to turn me away from this book. I came to this book for the paranormal story and the mystery. However, what feels like a large portion of the book is dedicated to the romance or love story of the characters. I didn't pick this up to read a romance novel. This was the case in the last book I read as well. This has a big chunk of time dedicated to how the characters 1st met and their marriage.
I have contemplated once or twice to give up on the book because of this.
Without going back and checking, I think the previous book I read was A Stroke of Winter?
