About this listen
The Stormking has brokered an uneasy peace with the West, but the threat of an elven invasion looms in the East.
Hoping to prevent a bloody war, Will departs in search of the mythical hidden gate to the elven homeland and believes the country is safe in his absence.
He is wrong.
Adept at manipulation, the elves seek to conquer from within, and their spies have already infiltrated the kingdom. As Selene prepares to defend her throne, she discovers that the elven plot runs deeper than the blackest shadows. Duty demands she put her nation first, but a loathsome ally urges a darker choice. Beset by foes and without the Stormking, she has never been so alone… or vulnerable.
She cannot win without power. To gain it, she must embrace an ancient evil or make the ultimate sacrifice. But she is Selene, the lich queen of Terabinia, and defiance is in her blood. When the hour comes, she will rise to face her legacy—and curse—as the Daughter of the Dragon.

An enjoyable story
Exciting story that ties up some loose ends in the last book and sets up nicely for the next book(s) in the series.

Where to go from here?
So as in many other fantasy stories with a godlike protagonist (at least in terms of power) you run into a problem: how do you keep the story engaging when the protagonist is the strongest?
In WoT Rand is a little crazy, in DBZ Goku is never there for the fight and has to spend 10 episodes running towards it, and in Jujutsu Kaisen we have Gojo being sealed because of a human flaw, not a failing of his powers. I think the solution in this book, takes some good steps with a bit of guidance from its fantasy predecessors, while remaining its own thing.
Wisely, to keep the story engaging, this book keeps expanding the POV roster. Although Will is my favourite, he is less prominent in this book than the previous. This is justified both from a meta-narrative point of view and in-world logic. But the other POV’s are very fascinating as different mentalities and skill sets are explored.
A thing I really enjoy in this series is the commitment to the world, its options, and the intelligence of the characters. Often in fantasy, you see authors have a “ta-da” solution to a problem (a time-turner for example), but then in the next instalment that device would trivialise the plot - so instead they go “umm, no actually they are gone now, so yeah”.
They don’t do this here. Early in the series we are introduced to regeneration potion and later teleportation - two things that have the potential to undercut meaningful dramatic tension. But instead of pretending that it didn’t happen - the world and the characters engages with it.
The characters are well prepared and resourceful and are therefore able to overcome ever increasing challenges. Instead of lowering the capacity of the characters we up the problems they face in a meaningful way.
God damn these books are great - and I will fight people who say otherwise (for legal reasons that is (mostly) a joke).
SIDENOTE: I just noticed the name of the gods… I am an idiot.

Another great book in this series.
Exceptional writing and story telling. I'll be keeping an eye out for book three as I start from very beginning.

One of the best in the series
Having been crazy about this series since the first book. It’s come a hell of a long way from Will’s student days and now the story is all encompassing. It always manages to remain fresh and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes now.

A disappointing listen
Moving away from the focus of William highlights the lack of consequences within the series, nothing is on the line and all of the gambits within the story suffer because of it.

Not even solid narration could save it
When an author removes the primary series protagonist for most of a novel it's a good indicator it's not worth staying with.
