Summary

The race to save Hagwood has begun! Wicked queen Rhiannon, High Lady of the Hollow Hill, is more intent than ever on finding the enchanted casket containing her heart. Made immortal through evil sorcery, she has ruled the land of Hagwood heartlessly for far too long. If someone can discover the lost casket and destroy the beating heart within, her terrible reign will end. The werlings Finnen and Gamaliel - in possession of the golden key that will unlock the High Lady's casket - race to find it first. Their quest leads them to the Pool of the Dead, where the hideous Peg-tooth Meg resides with her slimy snails and mutated sluglungs. Caught between the armies of Peg-tooth Meg and the High Lady, Gamaliel and his friends must make a desperate stand to save the world of Hagwood from the forces of evil.

Fantastic

Brilliantly narrated by Jenna Berk. I thought at first the story was twee but the second book is darker. Looking forward to the finale.

I loved the idea of my mother who was so amazing she tried to help me with reading and the book really was pulling me down within the first couple of chapters. This is a very interesting experience and has been helping me think outside of the box and have an open mind. But I have been through all the emotional problems that have been raised in the past books and made me feel like I have to help that's how it pulls you inside.

Great second installment to a kid/ya dark fantasy

Like Redwall but want something a little darker? Try Robin Jarvis' work. Countryside setting, tale of adventure, folklore vibes/characters

Frustrating

When your child is asking you for the umpteenth time how the titular heroes and heroines can be so stupid, you know you’ve got an extremely frustrating read on your hands. Whilst the narration doesn’t lend itself to the story and perhaps magnifies the ridiculousness of the decision making, we gave up half way through the book when yet again the characters made utterly ridiculous decisions with no developing character curve present. Knowing the third book isn’t on Audible makes the decision easier given there was no actual way to end the trilogy via audible anyway.
