Summary

For fans of World War Z, a chilling mystery, an ancient threat, and a race against time to save humanity—inspired by the true events of the Dyatlov Pass incident

Russia, 1959. Nine members of a Soviet mountaineering team on an ambitious expedition into the Ural Mountains are found dead, victims of massive and bizarre injuries. The Dyatlov Pass incident, as this grisly event came to be known, remains unexplained to this day.

Iraq, 2019. Ex-soldier-turned-mercenary Cameron Becker is escorting a Russian businessman named Luka Belikov through Baghdad. It seems like a routine job, until Belikov is abducted on Becker’s watch. After forming an uneasy alliance with WHO medic Lori Dalton, Becker sets out to uncover the truth behind the attack, and quickly realizes he’s caught in the middle of something far bigger and more dangerous. As bio-terrorists prepare to unleash a virus that causes humans to descend into ravenous madness, the pair are thrust into a desperate race against time to prevent a global plague that could wipe out human civilization.

Who is behind the attack? What do they want? And how can humanity hope to survive? Becker and Dalton’s answers may just lie deep within the icy wastes of the Ural Mountains.…

Fun, exciting, realistic, dark.

Liked the characters and loved the explanation behind what makes the zombies.

Only dislike was the motivation of the secret villain ‘Prophet’. Felt like that reveal was a touch weak.

Other than that, amazing fun and a fantastic take on the zombie genre.

100% recommend

A good listen.

Felt like reading a 90's action movie, safe and simple story, but overall enjoyable.

The story has all the cliches and action scenes you would expect. While the story misses the depth of a great read.

The narrator was spot on. Well read and clear, bringing character and life to the story. For me raising the overall score from a 3 to 4.

Good story

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. Good rounded characters and compelling story. Pacing is good with no filler. Everything is told for a reason.

Excellent story and flow

Overall it was easy to get into the characters and follow the plot and found I had got through the book in two days as I wanted to keep going to the end.
I did find some parallels to other WJ books but there was an effort to add extra dimensions. However, I did think the book could have been told over two or three books as we would want to build the world further or get to know the characters better which would have added weight to moments later on. Also there seemed to be a lost story behind the Russian attempt to master the virus, the village and native people and also explore the virus getting out - thought there was more potential to go deeper

Not outstanding but with little to critisize

I read the book not as a fan of the writer but the youtuber. I was missing a little but more detailed descriptions. Tension-building moments were good. I loved the parts with flying! I appreciate that there wasn't too much focus on romance and "guy gets the girl in the end".
