Summary

In the remote and unpredictable Aleutians, danger comes without warning in an adrenaline rush of a novel by USA Today bestselling author Rachel Grant.

Archaeologist Fiona Carver has unfinished business in the Aleutian Islands. After an emergency evacuation cut her first expedition short, she’s finally back. But time is not on her side as she races to finish documenting the remnants of a prehistoric village, recover missing artifacts, and track down missing volcanologist Dylan Slater.

Having bluffed his way onto Fiona’s team with fake credentials, wildlife photographer Dean Slater is willing to risk more than federal prison to find his missing brother, but he needs Fiona’s help. She knows the inhospitable terrain better than anyone.

When the two set out together on a perilous journey, it becomes more than a recovery mission. In their fight for survival, nature isn’t the only threat. They aren’t the only ones on the hunt. Mile by dangerous mile, someone is hunting them.

Difficult to discern the different voices

I really enjoyed the story. It was exciting. However the narration was not so good. I didn't like the gravelly voice and could hardly discern the difference in the characters' voices.

I loved this book.

I loved this book. The female character is so strong and determined, and competent. I did not see the twist at the end, but I felt as if I was with the archaeologist and the "Birdman" every step of the way; the story kept me engaged completely. The first thing I did on finishing the book was to look up the publishing date for the next instalment of Fiona's story. I am now impatiently awaiting that next book.

"Welcome to my one man civilisation."

The main mystery to me is why I finished this book? I can stand a little romance with my stories but this, sadly, is the opposite - a little story with the romance. And further, with the main protagonists, characters with whom I could find absolutely no empathy: in fact, just the opposite. Ah, well. But finish it I did, hence the mystery. Just inertia, I guess. I will not be continuing on to the next in series, however.

Narration alternated between two of the performers, one female and one male, presumably Eva Kaminsky and A.J.Chandler, each reading sections most appropriate to the dominant protagonist at that point. Both were good despite Chandler's apparent inability to pronounce the word ornithologist. A third narration came almost at the conclusion telling of a meeting of villagers, outside of the direct plot action, a childlike voice - Michele Yatchmeneff - which was quite adequate for the brief incursion. Between them, their input was good without either adding to or subtracting from the book.

The description of the island on which the action took place was good and really made the book readable despite the tedious, emotionally introspective, and repetitive romancing:. As the author states in her introduction, although this particular island is fictitious it is based on others in the area. An interesting grouping of which I had previously known nothing.

I'm sure this book will thrill readers who enjoy romance mystery thrillers and can recommend Dangerous Ground to them. Sadly, I am not one of them.

Ridiculous

Fake ornithologist (referred to as an orinthologist lol), on field trip, trips over so many incorrect and silly aspects that I couldn't continue even 4hrs in.

A.T. Chandler (AKA Aiden Snow/Caleb Dickson) and Eva Kaminsky (AKA Mindy Kennedy?) are both fine narrators, much listened to and favs on Audible, but not even they could save this silly story. SO DISAPPOINTING
