Do not judge a book by its cover

I first discovered the novel Cry Wolf when I was just starting secondary school. I still love it today, and was delighted to see it's on Audible (I think the print version of out of print now, which is a real shame, but at least the audiobook is still available!)

It's a very interestingly drawn story, with the main plot (which is quite dark) seamlessly intermingling with an insanely comic and farcical sub-plot. In most situations this wouldn't work, but Susan Gates gets there effortlessly, and Daniel Hill's deadpan narration does justice to all aspects, until they culminate in a shocking and incredibly believable conclusion.

If I could, I would actually put Cry Wolf on the national curriculum - I think every kid should read this story, and think about its themes - of class, teenage angst, gang culture and most importantly, the fact that you shouldn't judge by appearances (pretty much every character does something unexpected at some point). The not judging by appearances thing extends to the cover art as well - it's not about a werewolf, I promise!
