About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Uncover the lost years of Critical Role’s unrelentingly upbeat, undead spellcaster in this original prequel novel to Laudna’s adventures with Bells Hells.

For as long as she can remember, Laudna has had a friend. A mentor. A little voice whispering in her cropped ear, promising that, no matter how monstrous she becomes or how far she wanders, there will always be someone to guide her.

And so, Laudna is content.

But the thought of more—of life, of love, of the magic stirring in her still veins—is unrelenting in its familiarity. More is the dream of a little girl trapped behind the bloodstained walls of Whitestone, and the nightmare of the woman who now stalks the woods outside them. More, Laudna’s little voice reminds her, is dangerous. From Tal’Dorei to Marquet, the world is infested with heroes destined to rid their kingdoms of creatures like Laudna.

The little voice is right, she knows.

But still, she thinks of more. And when she reaches for that dream, what reaches back will change everything.

Written by USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Khaw, Critical Role: Bells Hells—What Doesn’t Break delves into the unexplored years before Laudna joins up with the crew of Bells Hells, following her departure from Whitestone and solo adventures on the road toward Jrusar.

great character writing

this feels like the kind of book you can read without knowing anything about the critical role world. It doesn't rely on Easter eggs and actually builds a lot of depth and realism into a fantasy setting and character. Laudna's innocence is endearing

Fun-Scary Not Scary-Scary

As a fan of Critical Role and the Bells Hells Campaign, it was such an amazing look at Laudna before meeting Imogen and Bells Hells.

Robbie is an amazing narrator, with the addition of Marisha and Gray. I love the combination of the voice actress from the animated series and from the campaign was so much fun.

the story was such a whirlwind, and seeing Laudna navigate through her internal struggle as well as adapting back to the world. there were moments that were callbacks to the campaign as wells as moments that Laudna brought back from memory. Such a great book, beautifully written. highly recommend xx

Absolutely hypnotic

The writing feels effortless and so completely in character, it surprised me that it hadn’t been spoken from in canon Laudna herself. I am very pleased with the outcome, and had been a little afraid when the project was first revealed. I thought that it might be hard to capture the master piece of a character that is: Laudna. But instead it just added to her character, and backstory. This revealing the simplest emotion that Laudna is based on: kindness.

A Wonderful Addition to the Critical Role Book Series.

This book was wonderfully written and highlighted the tragedy and hope that encompasses Laudna's character.

Beautifully narrated by all those that contributed; all of the characters were brought to life (and unlike) expertly and with feeling that great voice actors are able to provide.

I suspect that I'll be listening to this spooky novel many times over.
