About this listen
Conscripted and forced to fight for her life.
Seventeen-year-old Vega Volante was almost done with her mandatory service to the Axis government. Everyone had told her it would be easy - in and out.
Then, the hostile aliens invaded.
Now, she slaves away training and retooling a mining ship for war as part of the Star Defenders. All Vega wants is to get home to her family. So, when a chance at officers training opens up, she jumps at the opportunity for more freedom. But there are only five slots, and Vega must use all her planet-born skill to fight for her place.
As if that wasn't enough, the ship's condition continues to worsen. "Accidents" may not be accidents. The lines between friends and enemies blur, and Vega realizes there's a lot more at stake than her chance at freedom.
Fans of Aurora Rising, Ender's Game, and Brandon Sanderson's Skyward will devour this story of adventure, mystery, and friendship.

Action filled space adventure
This is a great first book and I'm so looking forward to finding out more.
The characters are intriguing and the story holds you waiting for the menace you know to be out there in space to attack.

The flying chapters felt so real!
What a ride! And I mean that both figuratively and (kinda) literally. The story was really interesting and had me rooting for Vega from the beginning. Life on a starship is surely interesting, but especially so as a Conscript. The pace was good, the descriptions were on point, both creating a believable, "familiar" setting in the reader's mind while at the same time not using too many new terms (even though it's set many, many years into the future). The science part is not overwhelming, and it all made sense (from technology and medicine to food and even the aliens). And while I loved reading how the friendships Vega made came to be, I especially enjoyed the flying chapters (they felt so real!).
The narrator was so, so good. I loved Vega's voice, and how different all the other voices were (Amalie, Dax, Ethan, the Commander, the Captain...). She nailed all the nuances, especially Vega's anger-fueled moments, but also the moments of doubt, longing, fear, excitement, and joy. Seriously, she took the reading/listening experience to a whole new level. Oh, and her making the "technology sounds", like whoosh or pings made me smile every time. :)
Overall, a great story and listening experience that I'd recommend to fans of the genre as well as the author. Also props to the author for tying off a story and not leaving it in a cliffhanger. However, due to content, I probably won't be continuing this series. ~ 3.5 stars
Content:
Language: a lot: d**n, s**t, bu**, ba**s, etc.
Sex: none (there isn't even kissing), but even though it's frowned upon that opposite-sex crewmen stay the night together in one of their cabins, all (female?) military are in "some kind of birth control."
Drugs: not per se, but the "nebula experience" is described as something with similar effects. Characters engage in it while drinking.
Other: MC thought at seeing her roommate dressed up is "I'm sure I'm hetero, but seeing her made me doubt it for a second."

Space Adventure Worthy Reading
A new addition to my library but looked interesting, with a good origin story amongst the usual space academy/1st posting type of scenario this does well to get you attention as numerous life threatening incidents put our main MC under scrutiny. Without too many spoilers some of the story drifts into the usual teen angst / feelings but works quite well.
Not quite the appeal of Webers Harrington ,but i feel a pattern coming out. Narration by Wlazlo suited this story well and she does a great job with this helping to bring this up to the 4.5 stars overall.
I would check out the characters/ stories again as it has piqued my interest.
I requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts.
