Summary

How can a colony on Mars survive when the greatest danger on the planet is humanity itself?

All contact is lost with the first privately funded colony on Mars during a long and destructive sandstorm. Satellite imagery of the aftermath shows extensive damage to the facility. The 54 colonists who called it home are presumed dead.

Sometime later, a new mission sets down on the planet surface to investigate what remains of the derelict site, and crew biologist Dr. Jann Malbec soon discovers that the facility had developed into to a full-blown human DNA editing experiment - with unsuspecting colonists as the guinea pigs.

However, now that the truth of what was going on in the colony is revealed, powerful Earth-based corporations begin to fight for control of this extraordinary genetic research. But Dr. Malbec begins to realize that returning this technology to Earth could doom humanity to a worldwide pandemic of apocalyptic proportions. She must do everything she can to prevent that from happening - even if it means that she might never see her home planet again.

Reasonably Standard conspiracy theory

Thought the characterisation was one-dimensional and plot designs a bit clunky (oh, you’re a kick-boxing bad ass now?!). I got 3 hours in a decided that was enough for me. Useful popcorn.

Excellent series

Well thought out hard science fiction. Within the realms of Andy weir's the Martian and artemis.

Lost myself on Mars!

So easy to listen to and no sciency techy stuff to unravel. Loved it. Volumes 4-6 at the ready.

Captivating start and finish

I really enjoyed this series, perfect escapism on a beach holiday. The first book is well written, I related to characters and loved the pace. It slows somewhat in the second and the story goes a bit batshit crazy but I stuck with it and I was glad I did. The final book was everything I wanted it to be. Good pace and story, attention to every detail and a fabulous ending. Recommended!

Good twists

Good to have the trilogy of books in one purchase. The story continues on seamlessly and I think you’d really want to keep going if you only had the one book to listen to. The science fiction is believable without being unfathomable and the twists in the story are very strong using the ante all the time. With a woman as the main protagonist it makes sense having a female artist reading the book but for me I think the presentation missed the mark.

good story, builds quite well, tho some flaws

A good story but with some flaws (I can't believe the lack of safety protocols, backup systems, and poor communication systems that seem to be neccessary for the plot to work in various places). Also the narrator has rather a weird sentence delivery which becomes a little annoying.

Definitely not The Martian.

Distinctly average. Full of just-in-time plot devices that are abandoned just as soon as they appear. Time and time again you find yourself saying “Well that was convenient!” , Ultimately the fate of humanity is held in the balance and, quite frankly, you couldn’t care less.

It was ok

Whilst there was little new in the story and it didn’t have the love of characters or depth of narration of other well known Mars books it was a nice light read but don’t expect to be enthralled.

A newly found jewel

Superb take on a frequently covered theme with some unexpected twists. While set on Mars it’s more about the characters and their impact on each other than the space theme.
Very well presented and well worth the time to listen.
