About this listen

Two emperors - one must fall

Marcus Aquila and his patron Rutlius Scaurus have fought a superior enemy force to a standstill in Thracia, gaining the favour of the gods but paying a grievous cost in their family's blood.
Battle-weary and mourning their losses, they are tasked with rooting out a spy ring operating in the lands into which their imperial master Severus's armies are advancing.

Hunting down informers operating under the skilled and ruthless command of their sworn enemy Sartorius, spymaster to the usurper Niger, will not be easy. But the potential to turn his intelligence network, and thereby deceive and distract the enemy, might land a war-winning blow on the army of the east.

The quest to find and subvert their foes' informers will place the two friends at great risk, with torture and death the price of any mistake. While success will put them in the front rank of a bitter battle against battle hardened legions, hungry for revenge, in a bloody struggle to determine the fate of Asia's loyalty.

And Scaurus is a man with a powerful threat still hanging over him, a curse imploring the gods to fell him at the very moment of his greatest victory.

story

narration was weak compared to the rest of the series, it didn't bring the book to life . a Shame . I have all 14 books and would listen to more but not with this narrator

Another good story

The story is very good and I love history .
The one problem that I have is the change of narrator from all the other books in the series. The way Saul did the voice you could tell each character and place name where consistent. The New narrator has made the Emperor sound camp instead of imposing. There is no real change in accent for different people, so it’s hard to keep track of different characters talking as it feels like just one big long conversation. Even place names, now sound different, it would be good if you could re-record this with Saul picking up from where he left off.

Good story - lack luster reading

I have really enjoyed the series and the stories but this is the first audible reading I have been really disappointed in. Lack luster reading. Bring back Saul Reichlin

A sad loss of a great Narrator

RIP Saul Reichlin. Whoever took the job on after Saul had narrated the previous 13 books was always going to have a big job on their hands. I really, really struggled with this narrator. Very little distinction between characters. Incorrect pronunciation throughout. A huge shame. I don't see myself bothering with the next one, unfortunately.

Another great story following my favourite Romans. But please bring back Saul Reichlin!

Anthony Riches does it again, a fantastic story, I have really enjoyed listening to this whole series. Unfortunately, the change in performer for this book has really thrown me. After listening to all the other books in order and getting to know the characters by voice, I was completely lost in this one as to who was speaking. Whilst the performer was well spoken and clear, it wasn't the Marcus or Scourus I was looking forward to hearing. Please please bring back Saul Reichlin!

excellent series

with some 1600 audible books in my library, it was with deep regret when I heard of Saul Reichlins' passing. one of the two best narrators I've listened too.
this series is one of my favourites, and apart from one one, all have been superb, I eagerly await book 15.

not a fan of the new narrator

RIP Saul R- your narration will be sorely missed in this series, you brought these characters to life, gave them unique and believable voices. unfortunately the new narrator has not been able to take over, the characters sound the same, its hard to tell when a new character is speaking and it took away my enjoyment of a series I have so far loved

Good story but change of narrator was poor

This changes all the visions of the characters to not even knowing who is who as his accents are very poor for what they were before.

Im sure he’s good at other books. But he came in too late and it’s just not working

shame about the narrator

excellent story as ever from Anthony Riches however it is difficult to follow the narrative in places as the new narrator does not differentiate between character and they all seem to come from south London, even the Harmians and Dacians. Hopefully if he stays as the narrator for the series he can work on this.
