Summary

Matthew, they thought, was just going through a phase of talking to himself. And, like many parents, they waited for him to get over it, but it started to get worse. Mathew's conversations with himself grew more and more intense—it was like listening to one end of a telephone conversation while someone argued, cajoled and reasoned with another person you couldn't hear. Then Matthew started doing things he couldn't do before, like counting in binary-code mathematics. So he told them about Chocky—the person who lived in his head.

Loved it! came right here after Cuckoo's

Great, for it being set in the 60s, like a time capsule! Well read and a nice story

Quite good

No faults worth noting with the performance and the story was good. Just a little short and fairly uneventful.
I rather enjoyed the way it was portrayed, to keep you guessing about the nature of Choky. To be honest I expected a horror story from the description.
I was engaged from start to finish.

An Enjoyable and Engaging Book

This is the second John Wyndham book I've listened to on Audible and I've really enjoyed discovering his work. His writing is excellent, and his characters are sympathetic, engaging and true-to-life. The story of Chocky was unknown to me and really kept me engaged wanting to know how things would turn out and what would happen to the leading characters. Very enjoyable and brilliantly read - Damian Lynch gave an outstanding reading, bringing every character to life.

Logical Fantasy

Another great science fiction story from John Wyndham, I love his kind of scary logical Fantasy.

Great fun

Super little story… not unlike some other science fiction stories I’ve read over the years. But with Wyndham, even with sinister ploys, you can count on a satisfactory ending. In fact, this novel could be a little bit more sinister and threatening than it was… still…. No complaints on that score.
My astonishment was the way in which Matthew’s in other ways caring parents, were not at all worried about their twelve year old son cycling out for the day without any questions as to where. What! Weren’t there any paedophiles in those days??? Then he gets kidnapped for 10 days, and of course they are worried, and the police is looking out, etc. but there is nothing like the uproar and press coverage it would get these days. Mum finally has a first little cry when he’s found, brought home and tucked into bed. It lent a sense of unreality to an otherwise clever novel. Well read too.

Chocky

Apart from the obviously dated gender stereotypes, this was a lovely story, with Wyndham’s normal perceptive slant on human failings.

John Wyndham understated and underated

The story was matched by the narrator. Mr Wyndham makes the near impossible seem tangible so embedded in reality, as if it were only one step away.

Crystal ball

What a fantastic story. Like John Wyndham had a crystal ball back in the 60’s, predicting into a future we are just starting to experience the reality of now 60 ish years later . Domestic drama mixed with si-fi.
