Summary

Sometimes love is a lot closer to home than you think.

Charlie Burroughs can’t keep a man. All he wants is a good relationship like the ones he sees his friends having, but none of the men he picks ever work out. Despite him trying to be the perfect boyfriend, the men are either threatened by his looks or his epilepsy or a combination of the two. It’s lucky that he has his best friend, Misha, to turn to. The two of them are closer than peas in a pod and fiercely loyal to each other. He can’t imagine his life without Misha in it.

Misha Lebedinsky is the complete opposite of his best friend. Being the support system for his mum and twin sisters leaves Misha with neither the time nor the inclination for a relationship. Quick and frequent hookups are his favorite means of communication, and any other pesky emotional needs he has are met by Charlie, whom he’s devoted to. He lives a life of happy compartmentalization with no intention of ever changing.

All of this changes when the two best friends move in together. Being in close proximity means that they suddenly start to see each other in a very different light. But Charlie struggles when his drive to be the perfect partner clashes with the fact that he’s in love with a man who knows every little thing about him. And even if he can get past that, can a relationship ever work with a man who’d need a dictionary to tell him what love means?

From best-selling author Lily Morton comes a love story about a sunny librarian who has relationship written all over him and a cynical banker who doesn’t even have it in his blurb.

A story that will brighten your day

I fell in love with Charlie and Misha when I first read their story, and listening to the audio has only made me fall harder. All those feelings of warmth, delight, and sweetness were amplified by Joel Leslie's expressive narration, and the result was a story I could not pause once I'd started. No one writes banter as snarky and hilarious as Lily Morton, and I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout this book. Misha and Charlie had the kind of friendship all of us wish for, and watching their closeness take a romantic turn filled me with so much joy. Oh, the two of them could be frustratingly blind at times and utter failures at communicating, but somehow it only made them more lovable to me. What struck me the most about their story was how realistic it felt, and that's something I think is really hard to do in a best-friends-to-lovers romance. Because Charlie and Misha had such a strong foundation of friendship, it made the progression of their romantic feelings flow naturally. That's not to say that they effortlessly navigated the transition from friends to lovers, but even when they did get scared or uncertain about the path forward, they had years of knowing each other to fall back on and get them through it. And in case all of that isn't enough to sell this book, Charlie and Misha also had some of the most passionate, delightfully steamy moments I've listened to in a long time. This story was definitely an example of the emotional bond between characters making the sex even more explosive than usual, because holy cow did these two set the sheets on fire. All in all, I can't recommend this audio enough to anyone who enjoys moderate angst, emotion-driven romances with characters that don't take themselves too seriously.

Wonderful, fun audiobook

I loved this audiobook. It's fun, super sweet, and puts a realistic spin on a friends-to-lovers romance played out against the back-drop of the challenges, worry, and fear that accompany a potentially debilitating disease. All in all, it's pretty low angst. There are some communication fails and a selfish boyfriend, but the boyfriend gets kicked to the curb pretty early on, and the bad communication leads to some pretty funny scenes, particularly the book club scene and the ‘flirting’ scene at the dance where Misha set Charlie up with Doug. Misha’s jealousy over Charlie was so evident whenever anyone else came near him. No one was ever good enough. Misha was so caring and protective of Charlie that I just loved him. (#GoGrumpy!) It was all around fun and entertaining, and I high this audiobook to other fans of sweet romance.

The narration by Joel Leslie is fantastic and really bring the characters to life,

Witty, charismatic and loving!

I can never get enough of Lily and her exceptional characters. This book is filled with wit, sarcasm, hope, love and friendship. You'll laugh out loud at inopportune times, find hope within the words and fall in love with these best friends turned lovers!

Charlie has to be one of the sweetest, kindest and positive characters I've ever read. He's marched wonderfully by the humorously sarcastic and charismatic Misha!

I loved these friends and their "slow burn" (20 years in the making) romance. it's always awesome seeing fav character cameos and Joel's narration is fantastic! This series is a sure fire hit! Get reading!!

Brilliant friends to lovers and enjoyable audio

I love Lily Morton's writing. There are such well thought out and rounded characters that bring snark and fun as well as strong emotion, heat and a wonderful story.
Charlie Sunshine is no different. We met both men in book one and now have the chance to get to know them better and see how close their friendship actually is, and that's before any steps are taken moving into a relationship. Charlie definitely lives up to his nickname of Charlie sunshine. The one dark point of his life is his epilepsy and the increased number of "turns" he's had recently but Misha is there through everything with him, all of the highs and lows but this moving into a new kind of relationship brings it's own kind of troubles. I love how they interact and deal with everything that they face, both individually and together.
There's so much fun to have, reading this friendship/romance, as well as enjoying how they slowly grow closer and their friends enjoy bets at their expense as to how long it takes for Misha and Charlie to get together. Such a great cast of characters that bring love and support right along with the fun times.
Joel Leslie brings so much personality to the characters that it's so easy to fall into and enjoy the story. One of those that you don't want to stop listening to because you're enjoying it so much.

Lily does it again - great book

A great book full of characters you want to befriend, laugh out loud moments and moments you really want to shout at the main characters.

A great story, I couldn't put it down once I started, but I do love Lily Morton's RomComs, always such a great read.

I loved these characters, Charlie and Misha just work, and Joel Leslie brought them to life with excellent narration. He makes the art of narration seem effortless.

Well narrated, clean and clear. Joel Leslie was a joy to listen to, as always. I sped up to 1.10 on Audible

Wonderful audio version of a great story

I’ve already read Charlie Sunshine, it’s part of a series by Lily Morton that I love, so when I got the chance to listen to the audio, I leapt on that.

I’ve listened to a couple of Lily audiobooks now, and I’m so used to Joel Leslie’s narration by now. I get so lost in the story, Joel is so good at defining the voices of characters I’ve come to love. His narration really adds to the story.

Grumpy/Sunshine is one of my favourite tropes, and Charlie is certainly sunshine and snark. I love this story, best friends to lovers and it’s just such fun but with a serious side note too.

Great stuff.

Five stars!!!!

Another fun filled story, with romance, naughty bits, usual sarcasm and wit.

Narrator, Joel Leslie as ever always tells the story so fluently he is just so damn good at his job.

I love listening to something not too heavy or angsty, love the humour, Lily Morton seems to be fantastic at this.
Hurry up and give me the next story please!

Full of romance, passion and humour

Another winner from Lily Morton, with excellent narration from Joel Leslie. I adored both Charlie and Misha, talk about hidden depths! The story has just the right balance of romance and passion, with many parts that I wanted to listen to again and again. Misha had me laughing out loud at times. Overall, a wonderful story, that I really can't recommend enough. In fact, do yourself a favour, and listen to all of her books.

Fantastic

Charlie Sunshine is the second book in the Close Proximity series. It can be read as a standalone, but I personally believe the best enjoyment comes from reading this series in order. This is a slow burn, best friends to lovers romance that had a nice balance between fluff and angst. I’m a big fan of sweet romance mixed with fluff and humor, so this book was right up my alley. Charlie is a character that’s easy to adore. He’s a sweet man who has his own flaws, and that’s what really resonated with me.

The audiobook was narrated by Joel Leslie who does an amazing job. I loved how he voiced each character and brought the story to life. The audiobook production was also well done.
