About this listen

Compared to Charles' other books, this is more about no dig, eliminating weeds, garden layout, compost making, and using compost. There is also a history of no-dig vegetable gardening in the last 100 years. I want listeners to understand the context and the reasons why no dig has not been much valued until recently, and why it is now.

There is a section on site evaluation and creating beds and paths. Then comes a whole section on clearing weeds by mulching, so that you can have clean soil and less weed pressure. More time to be creative.

There are two sections with detailed planting plans for small spaces. These are based on what Charles grew then harvested there in successive seasons, and how no dig helped to achieve these results.

This audiobook has 18 sections, covering the key methods and wonderful results of no dig, from starting with weeds to sowing and planting straightaway, and cropping soon after.

You learn how to:

  • Start out no dig
  • Save time and avoid unnecessary effort
  • Create and look after beds and paths, with a whole section on paths and their value
  • Recognize and reduce the different types of weeds
  • Understand and use different types of mulch or soil cover
  • Know the differences between soil, compost, and different types of compost
  • Make compost
  • Grow an abundance of vegetables

Soil Revival

Being a professional gardener for 10 years, I'm used to working with soil. I have successfully used mulches to feed plants, protect the soil and combat weeds.

Charles' take on vegetable growing and gardening raises some interesting points and questions gardening philosophies gardeners follow without asking why.

These are big questions like do you know where nutrients comes from in the compost, why does mulching work, what makes a good growing medium and how big a problem are weeds?

Charles has inspired me to try my own trials at my allotments and gardens. Thank you for encouraging me look a little closer at soil level.

Truth

Incredible, enlightening information. You know far more about the natural world I’m suspecting. Weather/ temperatures/anomalies inclusive of control . I’ve already planted vegetables with zero experience using your techniques and can observe beautiful response of the plants growing. Thank you for your heavenly gift 😇

Is there a pdf sheet available

Very good but would benefit from pdf with names of weeds to identify on internet.

Valuable information

Excellent information but the narration was extreeeemely slow. I sped it up quite a bit but the long pauses threw the rhythm off a bit. I think Charles Dowding is brilliant though and wouldn't like the audio to put anyone off.

Works surprisingly well on audio

I did wonder how well a gardening book like this would work on audio, but I really enjoyed it. The author’s speaking voice is familiar to anyone who watches his informative videos, and he delivers the information as if talking to an audience (which works very well) rather than straight reading the text of the printed book (which wouldn’t have worked so well). It is a great presentation of his methods and I learned a lot from it. Things that I might have skipped through quickly in text thinking ‘I know that’ I had to listen to slowly and gained new understandings.

Pleasant listen

Pleasantly narrated. A lot of information about his various experiments and yields interspersed with good information. I found when listening that I switched off at points.

Fantastic information about No Dig

This really is a great book to get all the information you need for No Dig gardening, backed up by crop yield figures and bed sizes. Charles Dowding has a lovely voice, however, with his hesitation it speech, if like me and your Dyslexic and get distracted easily, I would turn the speed up to about 1.4
