About this listen

Nobody really knew how long the old Funnel mansion had stood empty, waiting up there high on Carpenter's Hill like a child's forgotten lunch box, any more than anybody knew just how long that old cat had squatted in behind the screen of the front porch window. Three young boys are about to find out just exactly what the dark and horrifying secret is behind that cat. Only two of them will survive.

Great short story!

Any additional comments?

There is a house on a hill and nobody knows how long it's stood there empty. People stay away from it but 3 boys decide to check it out. Only 2 will survive!!

This book surprised me a lot! In general, I tend to stay away from short stories because they can often feel incomplete, but not this one! This was awesome. Right from the start, the author builds suspense and keeps it going till the end. His descriptive way of writing, brought the house and the thing in it to life! I wanted this to be so much longer than it was.

Tom Zainea did a great job with this. He was able to capture the essence of the story perfectly and bring the creepiness to life.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts

A thrilling little tale

This short story left me wanting more - I’d love to read a full book based on these characters and dig deeper! The narration let it down a bit, as first of all the narrator is way too old to be impersonating a young boy, secondly I found he read way too fast which took away from the suspense. I found the voice very pleasant, but also too monotone and lulling, which made me lose track of the story and almost doze off more than once during the mere half hour story, so I had to rewind. I’m sure a different narrator would do wonders to this book.
As for the story: it’s beautifully written, and like I mentioned above the characters are immediately intriguing. The main character’s first person POV storytelling was a bit like listening to a person who wants to say too much in too little time and gets constantly carried away, not finishing any thought before moving on but finally running full circle anyway and giving us all we need to know to understand what’s happening.
