Summary

Stephen Dando-Collins paints a vivid and definitive portrait of daily life in the Tenth Legion as he follows Caesar and his men along the blood-soaked fringes of the Empire. This unprecedented regimental history reveals countless previously unknown details about Roman military practices, Caesar's conduct as a commander and his relationships with officers and legionnaires, and the daily routine and discipline of the Legion.

From penetrating insights into the mind of history's greatest general to a grunt's-eye view of the gruesome realities of war in the Classical Age, this unique and riveting true account sets a new standard of excellence and detail to which all authors of ancient military history will now aspire.

Better than most lectures.

I've listened to a number of lecture series on the Romans. I am by no means an expert but having heard quite a range this book was one of the most enjoyable, and easiest to follow.

Great, I would listern to this again and again.

Amazed at the distance travelled by the Roman armies. They could have been quite successful if they had just stopped fighting each other.

Modern terminology

Great listen but use of modern titles gets a bit annoying, it’s not hard to work out for the reader once the modern and ancient titles have been explained so no need to dumb down.

The Tenth Legion

I thought this was a fantastic book. Very well researched , it explained Roman thinking and attitudes as well as pure military history. It did get a bit repetitive with battle after battle , but that’s Roman history for you. I learned a lot from this book and highly recommend it

Good but remiss

An excellent solid piece of history, I really did like this book and I really did like the narrator......but, changing the rank structure to modern day was totally weird, it just didn't gel, it comes unstuck when you're talking about a pro-counsel or a legate and then all of a sudden, a brigadier general or major general. It's Roman history with its own Roman rank structure. If it ain't broke don't fix it. It's called HISTORY for a reason. I think Mr Dando -Collins underestimates his audience.

Probably when we hear of Caesar's solo brave charge towards Pompei's army

He brought life into even the mundane

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

All of it!

Informative and interesting

Very interesting read in which the author adds dramatic perspective to documented fact making it not just a history book but a thoughtful insight into the legions.

A fascinating "listen", packed full of facts

Centered mainly around the X Legion's time with Caesar in Gaul, the Civil War and in the Jewish Revolt the narrative is well constructed. It lacked the "daily life" detail I expected but still provides a huge amount on the Roman Army in battle and particularly their dogged determination and ingenuity in sieges. Thoroughly enjoyable.
