About this listen

Brennan Clayton lived a life of privilege and comfort, until experimenting with drugs in college led to him quitting school to live the life of an addict. His days are spent doing odd jobs for cash to pay for his habit. One night, he overdoses and nearly dies.

Doctor Lucas Martel works nightshift in the emergency room at Eureka Hospital. He’s reclusive and brilliant at his job, and he’s all too aware that not everything in Eureka is as it seems. He’s also a vampire, one who chooses to blend in with humans rather than feed on them.

Something strange is happening to the homeless and addicts on the streets of Eureka; many have gone missing or ended up dead, and others have overdosed on drugs so strong, no human cure can counteract them. Not normally concerned with human tragedies, the vampires can’t stand back and let this play out, or they risk exposing their world to the humans.

Brennan must face his demons, and Lucas will discover many things about himself, and what he believes to be true: A seedy underground of rogue vampires and drugs that must be stopped, at any cost.

Warning: Contains references to drug use and abuse.

Vampires, fated mates

Brennan truly broke my heart.
An irrevocable decision has led to a life of addiction.
He's caught in a vicious cycle of yearning to use drugs and feelings of depression and worthlessness, truly believing he's not worthy of love and that he's beyond redemption.
When he's rushed to the hospital on the verge of death he meets Dr. Lucas Martel who is a vampire on the night shift.
He's also Brennan's fated mate.
The connection between them was instantaneous but I truly appreciated that the romance wasn't rushed.
Lucas was the perfect foil for Brennan, the ultimate patient protector who helped him see his own value and worth.
I'm definitely hoping Lucas' friend Benjamin will be the focus of the next book.
Allen Jeffries did a great job narrating and bringing the story and characters to life.

Great world building

I thought the world building in this one was fantastic! It inserts the vampires seamlessly into our world and gives us a great mystery to solve involving the deadly drugs flooding the streets. Our main characters are the perfect pair to team up and solve the mystery, Brennan a young man who has fallen into addiction and nearly been killed by an overdose and Lucas, the doctor/vampire who saves him. I have a thing for the icy, arrogant, doctor main character whose reserve melts in the story and Lucas is perfect. Allen Jeffries gives a spot-on performance here. He captures Lucas' personality perfectly both before and after Brennan comes into his life and makes us feel such sympathy for Brennan and the state he's fallen into.

A Hot doctor and a drug user!

Wow, I was not expecting this book to be so encapsulating. Not having read the blurb, I went straight in and listened. The narrator was excellent. Very clear and easy to listen to.

We meet Brennan, a drug user, just before he ends up in hospital with an overdose of street drugs.

Lucas was his doctor and felt drawn towards Brennan as soon as he saw him lying on the hospital bed.

This story takes us through a journey from hunting drug dealers to helping an addict. Vampires and the seedy underworld loved this book, well written and thoroughly enjoyable.

Excellent narration from Allen Jeffries. Very clear and easy to listen to. Although, like usual, I sped up the audio, and I listened at 1.40 speed on audible, but I do prefer all my audios to be a little quicker.

So entertaining

This was a entertaining and fun read that I am so happy that I decided to listen to BL Maxwell’s book. There is so much brilliant chemistry as the draw between the main characters is not to be missed. I really enjoyed the idea of a Vampire as an ER doctor and I thought the way that some of the very heavy topics that the book discussed was well handled.

Good

I enjoyed this story, it's new to me so I had no pre conceived ideas on what the characters should be like so I took it as face value from the narrator. Enjoyed the narration but sometimes the voice can grate on me, so I did put the book aside for a day or two but after a break I soon was immersed back into the story. Brennan I really came to feel for, and I thought it was detailed well. It was nice to see there relationship progress and plus vampires which is always an added bonus. All in all I did like this read.
I received this audible from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Action, fated mates and a protective vampire.

I loved this vampire story by BL Maxwell.
Burning Addictions starts out as a story of, well, addiction. Brennan has sort of given up on life as he has progressively abandoned every meaningful thing (school, family and friends) due to his drug addiction.
When he od’s and ends up in the hospital he meets Lucas, a vampire working as a night-shift ER doctor.
The two of them are inexplicably drawn to each other and together they try to understand what is happening with the city’s increasingly large and out of control drug population.
I love Allen Jeffries' husky voice, he is so talented and was the perfect narrator for Lucas especially!

Vampire doctor

This is the first book in The Consortium Trilogy, I read it had vampires and started listening straight away. This series has an overall story arc about a rogue vampire who uses drug addicts for his own gain.

This book has Lucas, a vampire and ER doctor - original, and Brennan, a human and addict, as the MC's. Lucas find Brennan in hospital when he had an od. Lucas notices there is a strong lure to Brennan, but he is surprised since he already had a "fated' mate. Things turn out not as they seemed and it is a reveting read till the end. And leaves want to now more. Lucas and Brennan find their hea for real.

For the audiobook:
Allen Jeffries is a new to me narrator and I had to adjust, at the beginning, to his enthousiasme. I enjoyed the most of his narration for the characters, but some are a bit much but I liked them.

5*📚 4,5* narration, overall 5*

I was given a copy by the author and I am leaving my honest review.
