About this listen
Brute leads a lonely life in a world where magic is commonplace. He is seven and a half feet of ugly, and of disreputable descent. No one, including Brute, expects him to be more than a laborer. But heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and when he is maimed while rescuing a prince, Brute's life changes abruptly. He is summoned to serve at the palace in Tellomer as a guard for a single prisoner. It sounds easy but turns out to be the challenge of his life.
Rumors say the prisoner, Gray Leynham, is a witch and a traitor. What is certain is that he has spent years in misery: blind, chained, and rendered nearly mute by an extreme stutter. And he dreams of people's deaths - dreams that come true.
As Brute becomes accustomed to palace life and gets to know Gray, he discovers his own worth, first as a friend and a man and then as a lover. But Brute also learns heroes sometimes face difficult choices and that doing what is right can bring danger of its own.

Beautifully told 'fairy' tale...
An absolutely enchanting love story, but the audio narration was truly magical, and I can only hope that KC Kelly does as good a job on The Tin Box [edit...he DOES, even better in fact]. 5 stars doesn't seem enough, but that's all I can give unfortunately.

💛 Unexpected goodness!
My reservations about a love story between a blind man and a maimed man faded away once Brute began treating Gray with compassion. As Gray slowly thrived and the story slowly showed us their emotional connection and then physical attraction and then pure love, I was rivetted. Brute’s actions and gentle constancy made Gray’s life and the lives of others around him just that bit better and happier. Brute’s journey towards this realization about his soul’s purpose and therefore his rightful place in the world was everything wonderful. Though life threw lemons at him, Brute never soured. He continued being who he was and reminded me that good things do happen to good people too.
✨️🎧✨️ Mr. Kelly gave Brute a mellow, rich, timbre that suited his soul so you understood why he attracted good people the more his life improved. However, the narrator did better with one-on-one dialogue and he confused mumbling for accent work. So though perfect with Brute and Gray, the narrator was not particularly so with anyone else. The four stars are for his understated work with his energy and pacing – he knew exactly what kind of story he was performing - but it was his stutter that broke me. At the 80% mark, you will hear it when K.C. Kelly turned it up. The raw fear and panic in Gray’s stuttering vocals was palpable and powerful. I was so afraid, too. As an audiobook listener since 2015, this stuttering narration is the first to almost move me to tears. Wow!

Intense read
Just an incredible and hurtful story. When I first got this, I thought it would be another predictable story about forced proximity and imprisonment, but ohh I was wrong. Brute is unique, different, perfect. You can feel the emotions like you were there, experiencing them. Youl feel the MCs pain, you cry with the injustice they are going trough.
Although it was more Brute story than the relationship itself, the romance was there and it was strong. There is no smexy scenes, they were all skipped, but I didn't missed them.
K.C. Kelly, like always, did an amazing job with the voices and the narration. He could gather Brute's essence, but it was no match for his performance as Gray who stutterer so bad.

A heartwarming story!
Where does Brute rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
right on the top!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Brute/ Aric is one of the most lovable characters I’ve read in MM romance. He is used to being treated as a beast of burden for his abnormal size ( a seven-and-a-half-foot tall) and mocked for his ugliness
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Listening to the audio reminded me of the time when I was little and as if the rest of the world disappeared as long as the storytelling continued. Pure, innocent and magical!BRUTE was occupied all my attention. He is the giant, after all. One of those story written in a way so that you can enjoy while sitting on the couch with a blanket and a hot drink, and feeling warmed up. Comfort given, comfort received, and comfort shared
Any additional comments?
The author,Kim Fielding, did an excellent job again, with layering her characters in a way I emotionally connected to each and every one of them. Also, I was impressed by implementing these small stories ( legends, myths, morals) into the main one. Such as: the story of a bird, a sparrow Aric's mother kept in a cage, who did not know how to be free; the epic tale of Lorad and Lokad, the giants, who collapsed into the Great River and were drowned and gods turned the bodies to stone so that the giants could stand forever, guarding Tellomer from dangers from the sea.

So lovely
Relistened to this again. KC Kelly is the perfect narrator for this story. I love it to bits. I get carried away with Brute on his life's story, and particularly the love between him and Grey. An absolute favourite of mine.

excellent, much more than I expected
What did you like best about this story?
if you are told you are stupid and useless and treated like dirt for over 20 years you are bound to believe it.. but just a few small things soon show you otherwise.. young Warrens friendship and Alice's 'love' where wonderful.. of course I could say more but am not into spoilers. all the way to the bitter end Brute could not see the man he truly was..
What about K.C. Kelly’s performance did you like?
on first listening, I felt Mr Kelly's voice was slow and emotionless... how wrong I was. his voice was perfect for the character of Brute, and really brought the character to life.
Any additional comments?
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. even aimlessly riding round in my car just to continue listening, though I think this is a stand alone story, I hope we have not heard the last of the characters, how does Alice fair and young Warren? and of course I would like to think we can revisit the main characters to see where life leads them next.

I have doubts about the narrator
Although KC Kelly does great voices and can perform a scala of emotions, I am often annoyed he does not follow the author's text. If it sais 'whisper' or 'grumble' or 'snap', it should be performed as such.
The story is great. Intense. Good secundairy characters.
