About this listen

Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know - like the need for physical activity to get your brain working its best. How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget - and so important to repeat new knowledge? Is it true that men and women have different brains? In the New York Times bestseller Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule - what scientists know for sure about how our brains work - and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives. Medina’s fascinating stories and infectious sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he proves that most of us have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes. You will discover how: Every brain is wired differently. Exercise improves cognition. We are designed to never stop learning and exploring. Memories are volatile. Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn. Vision trumps all of the other senses. Stress changes the way we learn. In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works - and how to get the most out of it.

Brilliant book

The book has really valuable insights into the way the human mind and body work and on top of that Dr. Medina’s performance is top class! He really knows how to get your attention and keep it.

Essential understanding of how our brains work

Definitely one of the most useful and accessible books I've listened to in a while about how brains work and how we best process information. If you want to understand people and learning, this is a good place to begin. It's going on my re-listen list.

Too fast

Too fast, John narrates too fast and sometimes incomprehensible, slower is better I feel, why?

Fantastic book, terrible audio

There is a very wide disparity between the actual content of the book and the vocal performance by it's author. John Medina is truly talented and undoubtedly a thought leader in his field. Unfortunately he does not have the same credentials as a voice artist and recording engineer. Not too sure if he recorded it himself, but it certainly does sound like a home job!

Picture a living room wall that was painted some time ago. As time goes by, nails and skuff marks make their way into it's finish. Someone decides to touch up the paint where it was damaged, and after the paint has dried, realises that they have created a far bigger mess than they could have anticipated.

This is exactly the effect that is created with the revision of this audio book. The book comes out unscathed after a new release, but the audio book is a disaster. It turns into a patchwork, with very audible differences in voice timbre. It seems as if the dropins where even recorded in different locations and with different equipment! In short, the final effect sounds very unprofessional and amateur.

This terrible recording distracted me to the point that I could barely listen to it. Do yourself a favour and rather buy and read the book than waste time and money on the audio version. The book itself does not disappoint, but the narration by it's author certainly does.
