Summary

Blackstone and the Rendezvous with Death is an expertly plotted Victorian mystery that will keep listeners guessing to the last minute.

The body of a young man fished out of the Thames is of little interest to Londoners caught up in the excitement of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Yet to Inspector Sam Blackstone, the case is as puzzling as any he has ever come across.

Why should a corpse dressed in the rags of a commoner have the face of a gentleman? And if this man does belong to noble stock, why has no one come forward to claim the body? As his investigation proceeds, Blackstone finds himself entering the world of the aristocracy.

Death seems to stalk him, and as each new clue leads to nothing more than a new murder, Blackstone comes to realise that he is caught up in what may turn out to be the most horrendous crime of the century.

YA?

I have the impression that this is aimed at a young audience. It's not a bad story, but personally I found the Victorian social history lessons rather basic.

A ripping yarn

Well structured plot around fairly recent history. Nicely caricatured protagonists if a bit OTT, for me, with the nobility. Several interesting historical references that had me refreshing my knowledge:
I knew of the ABC coffee houses but not what they wrere based on or their commercial impact, Well worth a visit to Wikipedia.
I had forgotten about tthe New Scotland Yard that came before the concrete monstrosity with the rotating sign that that name now conjures up.
Enjoyed revisiting the history of the telephone's early days.
Series added to wishlist and author noted for future reads.

No Sherlock

An OK story. The bodies start to pile up which is always a concern when everyone the police talk to gets killed. The detective also did very little detecting.

predictable

It seemed the characters were drawn from a million other descriptions of Russians, posh folk, old salts. But I still wanted to hear it all so
