Summary

The Shadow Crusade has begun. While the Ultramarines reel from Kor Phaeron's surprise attack on Calth, Lorgar and the rest of the Word Bearers strike deep into the realm of Ultramar.

Their unlikely allies, Angron and the World Eaters, continue to ravage each new system they come across - upon the garrison planet of Armatura, this relentless savagery may finally prove to be their undoing. Worlds will burn, Legions will clash and a primarch will fall.

Heresy, blood and suffering

Quite possibly my favorite book from the series so far. Shows there is still honor among the traitors. Shows the pain and suffering of the 12th in sublime fashion.

Favourite Horus Heresy Book so Far

This book really gave some depth to traitor characters that I feel is sorely needed. I enjoyed following Argel Tal in the First Heretic. The depiction of his and Kharn’s bond in this book as well as the various side characters (largely World Eaters) gave the traitor legions a charm and personality beyond simply being evil or corrupted. The snapshots into Angron’s past and attention paid to him made him somewhat sympathetic at points which I enjoyed. I sincerely hope the nuance of traitor characters is explored in more depth going forward.

Great first book to listen to on audible

Great story from a great writer, if you know a lot about the lore you know where it ends but the journey is well worth it and the subversion of the title was a good twist.

The best

Easily the best HH novel. All-out warfare? Check. Philosophical debates? Check. Brotherhood & comraderie? Check. Moments of tragedy? Check. Religious Zealotry? Check. Titans battling it out? Check. Character development? Check. Overall narrative progression? Check. ADB does it again delivering a masterpiece.

Great Book

Good, well told story from the Heretics perspective. I nearly agree with the Word Bearers and World Eaters

Absolutely fantastic.

I was told this was one of the best books in the Horus Heresy series and after listening I definitely agree.

The Hours Herasy at its best!

Struggled to put this down once I started it. an undated classic amongst the hours Herasy series that you take a deeper dive into the Word Barrers and World Eaters legions as they bring death and distruction to the realm of Ultimar but it's this just the beginning?

The best WE novel

It’s a great journey on why the WE are the way they are. Kharn is a great character
