Summer 1312. The brutal murder of King Edward II's favourite, Peter Gaveston, unleashes a horde of demons . . .
Sir Hugh Corbett, Keeper of the Secret Seal, hastens to the Dominican Priory at Blackfriars where Gaveston's corpse awaits burial. But, on arrival, Corbett discovers that a series of macabre murders has turned the priory into a mansion of death, and a killer is roaming free.
Meanwhile, rumours spread that the pirate ships of the Black Banner Fleet are intent on entering the River Thames and, if the Sea Beggars succeed in their mission, they will weaken the king's power throughout the city.
Once again, Corbett must employ his wit and ingenuity to navigate the dangerous and deadly challenges ahead and bring the culprits to justice before matters turn grave indeed.

Absolutely brilliant as always
Oh yes! Another fabulous book from Paul Doherty. I love this series and am only sad that I cannot find audio copies of earlier books. As usual the author brings together the various strands of this story in such a clever way. The narrator, Richard Burnip, does a good job though some of the voices have changed from previous times he has voiced them. And I have to say that this is something that does annoy me. For example in this book, Edward II is voiced quite differently from his appearance in Dark Serpent. I'm not asking narrators to remember all the characters they have performed, but when doing a series surely it wouldn't be difficult to listen again to a character you have given voice to before. Ah well, maybe that's just my pet peeve and no doubt I'll get over it (in time). All in all though another really good listen.

Enjoyable experience
I find the mixture of fact and fiction in the story very satisfying. And an engrossing listen.

I look forward to each book, I follow Hugh Corbett and Brother Athelstan. I would love to see a television or film of the books.i enjoy the history and how it is interpreted.
