WOW! WOW! AND WOW!!!

I could not stop reading this book. I would put it on sleep timer when I was going to sleep, But certain parts made my eyes snap open. It was very tense towards the end. Congratulations Anna. What a fantastic book. I am definitely going to read your other books. Excellent narration by Cat. Absolutely brilliant!!!!

Creepy Aussie thriller

7 months pregnant Paige and her husband Hal are travelling in the Australian Outback when their car gets a flat tire. As he is changing the wheel Hal is bitten by a snake on his leg and his other leg is crushed by the car. Paige sets off on foot to find help and when 2 women in a truck pull up and offer to help they their nightmare begins.

I was very excited by the synopsis of this book and couldn’t wait to start reading. It wasn’t quite what the title led me to believe. The term ‘Ripper’ in the title made me think this would be a slasher type book, perhaps a little like the movie Wolf Creek. Instead I would say this book has more in common with Stephen King’s Misery.

I did enjoy the book which is very dark and disturbing. There was a deep sense of foreboding running through it. All the time you just knew something bad was going to happen! This sense of foreboding was helped by the descriptions of the crumbling ex hospital, Mabel House. The fact that Paige was alternately strong and then weak made her character believable. The character of Soona broke my heart and I was glad to read that after the events of the book she was being looked after in a care home.

The ending of the book was satisfying and although we’re not told by the writer, I hope that Paige will be able to have another child.
