Summary

Brought to you by Puffin.

A heartbreaking, compelling and timely story for older listeners about teen pregnancy, family trouble and unlikely friendships, set in 1960.

When Laura meets a French exchange student, Leon, she is flattered by his interest in her. She's never had any sort of boyfriend before.

One night, Leon walks Laura home - and her life will never be the same again.

Things start to change for Laura - first her moods and then her body. Laura isn't prepared for what she learns next - and doesn't even know how it could have happened.

When her family learns her secret, they are horrified. Sent away to save them from shame, Laura meets girls just like herself, whose families have given up on them - and they become a family for each other at the most difficult time in all their lives.

An emotional and moving tale for fans of Dear Nobody and Juno.

Amazing. Very heart warming. ❤️

I thought it was a fantastic story, and shows that some things people think are wrong can sometimes be good (such as Laura getting pregnant) the pregnancy itself was probably…not very good but having her baby was amazing. Some reviews I read described the ending quite abrupt and I can see why they thought that though for me it was perfect. I think this is my favourite Jaqueline Wilson book yet!!! If you do/don’t like this book I suggest reading ‘The diamond girls’ also by Jaqueline Wilson (it’s my second favourite book) or ‘love Frankie’ by….. can you guess? Jaqueline Wilson! 😂 Thnx for reading!

Interesting

This 1960’s set tale follows fourteen year old Laura Peterson, who, is living an ordinary life with friends and crushes, like a regular teenager .

However, she turns her life upside down as without realising it, has made a baby and is pregnant. She consequently moves to Heathcote House, where she follows the guidelines set to grow a happy baby.

Laura meets friends and enemies at her time there. But she is worried that she will be forced to put her baby up for adoption, as many of her friends, though first refusing too, have had to give her babies away.

(I won’t spoil the rest for you all!!)

This book is not perhaps for the original target readers of Wilson (ten to twelve year olds) but rather targeted at an older, more mature audience. It completed its mission successfully. The story itself was sensitive and brilliant, though I thought the ending was slightly abrupt - resulting in me marking it down a star- but the narration was flawless and wonderful. Usually it takes me a few hours to like the narrators voice but I liked Tamla Karl’s immediately and immensely.

Lovely read

I really enjoyed this book. It gives great insight into what it must have been like to be a teenage mum.

Yet another absolutely brilliant book

Yet another absolutely brilliant book by Jacqueline Wilson.

I grew up listening to and reading Jacqueline Wilson's children's books; she has always managed to broach life's most serious issues in the most caring, fantastic way. Her characters and stories are always so well defined. This book is no different; an absolutely excellent listen.

This book is aimed at older teens and young adults; I am 29 and to my horror, am no longer classed as the target demographic! But I gave this book a listen anyway, the whole time cuddling and feeding my own new baby (gorgeous 9 week old little boy at the time of listening) and whilst I am so lucky to live in the era I do, be married and older than the protagonist, Jacqueline Wilson makes it so easy to put myself right in her shoes and it had me very close to tears many times; gripping my seat and clinging onto my baby towards the end.

This has gone down as one of my favourite books. It is captivating right from the very beginning, both author and narrator catapult you into the early 60s. No matter your age, this is well worth the listen and I think I'm about to go and hunt for some more of the author's teen/young adult books!

A moving book for an mature young person

A beautifully moving, heartbreaking and educational book that I would say is definitely for older children, if not teenagers. I wouldn’t recommend this book for anyone below the age of 12, depending on their maturity level, as the book explores some more adult content and anyone below the age of 12 may not understand some of the things that are implied in the story. I am 28 but really enjoyed the story.

It was eye opening to learn of what it would have been like to be a pregnant teenager or single woman in the 60’s. I found myself becoming upset and angry about how Laura had been treated throughout the story, especially as it was clear that she had no idea what was being done to her and did not consent to what lead to her pregnancy. I felt it highlighted the injustices of the time and the lack of education given to young girls and probably young boys too.
I found Laura as a character a little bit annoying at times because of how naive she is, but as I mentioned earlier, the lack of education around sex and relationships of that time was 100% the reason for this and again, highlighted the social issues of the time.

The narration was excellent and I felt that the personality of Laura and the other personalities in the story really came to life.
Overall, the story was great. I initially purchased the book thinking it would be an easy listen and something I wouldn’t have to pay attention to but it’s definitely a book that grips you straight away, although it takes some time to get to the main story.

Left a review before but so much more to add

So interesting to hear about how uneducated the children back in the 60s were about what they considered inappropriate topics but children get so well educated on now.

Nostalgic and perfectly written

I read this book in a couple of days. The descriptions of the food of the time, the television programmes and of life in the 60’s are so on point. A true reflection of my experience as a teenage unmarried mother. How times have changed and so much for the better. A beautiful story.
