Summary
World-renowned forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta and her husband Benton, a psychologist with the US Secret Service, have returned to Virginia. They are headquartered five miles from the Pentagon in a post-pandemic world that’s been torn by civil and political unrest.
Just weeks into the job, Scarpetta is called to a railway track where a woman’s body has been shockingly displayed, her throat cut down to the spine. But the trail of clues will lead Scarpetta back to her own neighbourhood.
At the same time, a catastrophe occurs in a top-secret lab in outer space, endangering the scientists aboard. Scarpetta is summoned to the White House to find out what happened. As she starts the new investigation, an apparent serial killer strikes again, this time dangerously close to home.

Typical Patricia Cornwell brilliance
I've read pretty much all the Scarpetta books, and they never get boring. The storylines are so different and unique. It's good to have Kaye back in Richmond.

Struggled to keep listening!
Only ever read her books before. Found the voice of narrator difficult to listen to and not how I imagined Kay to sound was disappointing. Kept listening as the story was okay. But wished I'd kept to reading the books!!

Toneless delivery
Good story on the whole but completely destroyed by toneless delivery. Intonation poor sounded as a lot of statements were questions. Very hard to finish because of this appalling reading.

Disappointed
This is not up to her usual standard. Story dragged out till the end then everything crammed in at the last eight minutes. Not enjoyable.

Meh!
I am sad I have this opinion but this was very meh! I loved this authors previous books, and was excited to download this, but I was disappointed. the characters were the same familiar people which was comfortable, but the story line just didn't flow. No need for the white house detail, could have expanded more on the bits that came to life once the culprit had been identified..sorry but bit disappointed.

Patricia Cornwell is perfection as always
the story is gripping right till the final momemts, there is tragedy and chaos throughout some of which i will never forgive!
as always clever, witty, and engaging.

You need to speed up the audio 1.2x
Good book but I agree with other reviews that the narration is slow and robotic. However I think they may have slowed the audio as if you play it at 1.2x speed it actually sounds much better. Much more natural and as I recall the narration for previous books. Definitely speed it up if your app allows!

Ok but…
To start the narrator’s voice annoyed me for some reason. It made it hard for me to get into the story.
The story was ok but it had a feeling of tying up loose ends to end the series. I found it hard to follow in some places and got lost at the end. I must have missed the meeting in Richmond due to not being able to concentrate.
The epilogue left me wondering it was like a bit of a let down after the way the final chapter built up.
If another Scarlett’s book is done I will of course read it though. There is a chance as the door was left open.
