About this listen

Noble Savage?

Subject: a contribution to the contemporary interest in the contrast between the noble savage of Rousseau and flawed civilised man. Common humanity with virtues and defects stressed. Only Christian teachings offer hope. Interesting that union of two races prevented.
Story: Atala both virgin saint and idealised, unattainable heroine of type found in romantic legend and Courtly Love tales. Protracted agonies of lovers, especially the deathbed description, of Victorian proportions. Slow.
Style: highly polished and poetic.
