About this listen

This book is a standalone prequel to The Dublin Trilogy.

For Detective Bunny McGarry, life is complicated, and it is about to get more so.

It’s 1999 and his hard won reputation amongst Dublin’s criminal fraternity, for being a massive pain in the backside, is unfortunately shared by his bosses. His partner has a career-threatening gambling problem and, oh yeah, Bunny's finally been given a crack at the big time. He’s set the task of bringing down the most skilled and ruthless armed robbery gang in Irish history. So the last thing he needs in his life is yet another complication.

Her name is Simone. She is smart, funny, talented and, well, complicated. When her shocking past turns up to threaten her and Bunny’s chance at a future, things get very complicated indeed. If the choice is upholding the law or protecting those he loves, which way will the big fella turn?

Angels in the Moonlight is part of Caimh McDonnell’s critically acclaimed Dublin Trilogy series, which melds fast-paced action with a distinctly Irish acerbic wit, and it is complicated.

Angels in the Moonlight was selected as a book of the month in the Rick O'Shea bookclub, Ireland's largest bookclub.

Praise for Angels in the Moonlight

“Quite possibly the best book I’ve read this year. The writing is tremendous; Caimh McDonnell has a gift for storytelling and leads his readers on a merry journey through his books, regaling them with humour and wit.” (The Quiet Knitter)

Angels in the Moonlight is bloody brilliant. McDonnell doesn’t put a foot wrong. Perfection on a page!” (Bloomin’ Brilliant Books)

“This Dublin-based police procedural has an intriguing, multi-pronged plot that flows smoothly without getting bogged down by details. Mystery fans will enjoy the roller-coaster ride. The prose is clean, sharp, and lively. This mystery, deftly seasoned with humor and Irish slang, is memorable and powerful. The characters are compelling and well-developed. From protagonist Detective Bunny McGarry and his fellow coppers to peripheral characters like the streetwise nuns, this book is full of memorable characters.” (The Booklife Prize from Publisher’s Weekly)

Simply Brilliant

This is both an exciting thriller and also a highly comedic novel which imho is almost impossible to pull off convincingly but Caimh McDonnell manages it with great flair and style. I rate Bunny as one of the greatest characters in modern fiction and this book is the best in the series so far. It feels kind of right that, after two novels in the series, we go back to find out how things started with Bunny and how he became the man he is in the later novels. It must also be said that the narration by Morgan C Jones is absolutely perfect and I loved the exchanges between Bunny and his Hurling Club kids. Brilliant.

Christ on a motorbike...

So funny, evocative and entertaining - I could listen forever! It's got me practising my Cork accent too... Im trying to do these in order, having listened to (and loved) all of The Stranger Times series so far and getting conpletely hooked on the writer. Next book in the Dublin Trilogy lined up ready to play as I type, and I can't wait!

The best narration on Audible

The narrator is fantastic. I now have the voice of an Irish detective from Cork as my inner monologue. I've enjoyed all of Caimh McDonnell's books but the ones with Bunny McGarry stand out.

Wonderful Love Story

Funny as always, no, laugh out loud hilarious. I love Bunny & Co, and this book was no exception. Filled with sadness, laughter, friendships and a glorious love story. The “crack” was deliciously delivered by one of the best narrator ever. Bunny and Simone will leave you heartbroken at the thought you’ll probably have to wait for a few more stories before the lovers are reunited.

Useful back story before Last Orders

Another terrific, funny book, enhanced by brilliant narration.

I wasn’t sure whether to listen to it before Last Orders, but am glad I did - what happens is pretty central to the next book.
