Summary

A desperate young alpha. An older alpha with a hero complex. A forbidden love that can’t be denied.

Young Xan Heelies knows he can never have what he truly wants: a passionate romance and happy ever after with another alpha. It’s not only forbidden by the prevailing faith of the land, but such acts are illegal.

Urho Chase is a middle-aged alpha with a heartbreaking past. Careful, controlled, and steadfast, his friends dub him old-fashioned and staid. When Urho discovers a dangerous side to Xan’s life that he never imagined, his world is rocked, and he’s consumed by desire. The carefully sewn seams that held him together after the loss of his omega and son come apart - and so does he.

But to love each other and make a life together, Xan and Urho risk utter ruin. With the acceptance and support of Caleb, Xan’s asexual and aromantic omega and dear friend, they must find the strength to embrace danger and build the family they deserve.

This gay-romance novel by Leta Blake is the second in the Slow Heat universe. It has a strong, happy ending and a well-crafted non-shifter omegaverse. It features alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, heat, and knotting. No cheating. Content warning for brief sexual violence.

An emotional and intense sequel. Loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading/listening to Slow Heat last year and was eager for more of these characters. Xan was an important secondary character in this non-shifter omegaverse story. My heart went out to him, not only because Jason, his best friend and lover, found his erosgape (true mate) in Vale, but also because Xan truly felt he was an omega confined in an alpha’s body.

I would certainly recommend reading or listening to Slow Heat first so you are familiar with the background to these characters, the various complex relationships and the world they live in.

There was so much I liked about this well-written sequel. The many characters are varied and well-developed, and the lengthy and very real conversations help exhibit their personalities. The non-romantic bond between Xan and his contracted omega, Caleb, was already established at the start of the story, having occurred in the intervening years since book one. I loved how selfless and supportive these two are of each other, with no jealousy and only concern for their happiness. The main romance is between Xan and Urho, as they fall in lust and gradually in love, and how they deal with the forbidden nature of their attraction. I particularly liked the unique three-way relationship that develops between Xan, Caleb and Urho over the course of the story. They gelled together to make one lovely new unit. It was great that Jason and Vale are part of the plot and to see how their relationship has progressed too.

There’s also plenty of other conflict and angst:

Xan’s relationship with his father and the risk to Xan's inheritance because of this rift and his 'unmanned' status,

Janus, the cousin who is challenging Xan’s position in the family company,

Xan’s former ‘lover’, the violent and nasty Monhundy,

the flu epidemic that could endanger Vale’s unborn child and could put Caleb at risk if he conceives during his heat.

Gah! So much threatens Xan, Caleb and Urho’s happiness. It’s such an emotional story.

There’s also the super-hot and passionate conversations/scenes between Xan and Urho. Phew! How they deal with Caleb’s heat is also intense!

Michael’s wonderful narration makes this excellent story even more enjoyable. He artfully creates distinct voices for each character to match their individual personalities, and as always, his pacing and delivery are spot on. A highly recommended fifteen hours!

A solid story with fantastic narration

The audio narration was fantastic. The narrator's distinct interpretation of the different characters made them easy to picture and identify.

This story has a lot going on in it. Hence the length. But it is well paced to keep the reader engaged.

I loved Xan and Urho together. One of my favourite scenes in a book this year has to be the one in Urho's library. Go read it and tell me if that doesn't take your breath away.

I'll admit I wasn't a big fan of Caleb or the ending with all three of them. I felt as if he was a third wheel throughout and never really believed he got a happy ending, not the way Xan and Urho got one. Shame, because otherwise, this was a solid story and almost a perfect read.

Great narration of a wonderful love story....

What a whopper of an audio. I loved the story, but Michael's wonderful narration was the icing on top of the cake!! A distinct voice for each character [I particularly liked Caleb], the pacing and the delivery was excellent!! Can't wait to see where Leta goes with this series. 5 stars.

All the love for who felt not worth to be loved.

I really adore this book. In parts it is brutal, other parts so sweet and all in between. All the characters are well established, but I keep wanting to know more about certain characters. It is not always an easy read/ listen but so worth it.
The narration is excellent, all characters have distinct voices . I hiighly recommend this book.

So good

I loved this book as much as the first one, maybe even more. Xan is one of my all time favorite characters.

Truly beautiful

Okay. So I was very afraid to listen to this book when I saw it's release. Mainly because Slow Heat (Book 1) was so depressing for me. It was unique and a great listen, but depressing nevertheless. So I was afraid.

But I couldn't resist in the end, I mean the author is amazing and the narration is the definition of perfection. And my God I'm so happy that I gave this book a chance. It was everything and more. I absolutely adored it, more so than the first one in all honesty.

Anyway, I recommend it for anyone who's on the edge of buying it. I don't think you'll regret it.

Amazing

Oh my, that was even better than reading the book. Or worse, depending on how you look at it. What a sobfest. It was so bloody good.

If Leta Blake tugged on my heartstrings with Xan's story, then the narrator used those strings to rip my heart out and play yoyo with it.

made no bones in my last review that Xan broke me almost every time he appeared on the page in Slow Heat. Now we catch up with him five years later and committed to an omega. But his ability to break my heart remains. He hates himself and is wilfully self-destructive which is almost painfully to read but once he is happy, he is a joy. I think Xan is probably my favourite character from the series.

Now I need Ray's story, because the possibility of a bearded bear of an omega turning up in that tale has me salivating.

dragging, but nice

Again, very well narrated. I like this world and those beautifully written characters. The second half was boring at times. On to the next.
