Summary
Louise Penny's much loved hero confronts a dark plot lurking beneath the elegant facades of Paris - lose yourself in the breathtaking new crime thriller by the number one best-selling author.
On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather for a family dinner with Armand's godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. But the evening ends in horror when Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Armand is convinced is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on an elderly man's life.
When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand on a desperate search for the truth that will take him from the top of the Tour Eiffel to the bowels of the Paris Archives.
And as Armand begins to uncover the secrets his godfather has kept hidden for decades, he finds himself ensnared in a web of lies and deceit that threatens to destroy everything - and everyone - he holds dear.
For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide....

Unbelievably good
I love this series so much: the flawed but lovable characters, the strong female roles, the twists and turns of the plot, the descriptions of places that make me want to vist or go back, the evenutal triumph of good over evil no matter how elusive, and I'd give my eye teeth to find an Armand. The excellent narrator just makes the whole thing perfect.

Deeply moving and an important story
We have so enjoyed this book, beautifully read by Adam Sims. It covers many topics that are important, with the through-going themes of trust and integrity.

Reading rather than listening recommended
This plot goes global, and is so full of twists and double crosses with switching back and forth of scenes, all at lightning speed, that my husband and I both found it difficult to follow at times. Denouement not entirely credible. Stephen's character has silently shed the 2 children he had in a previous book. Sadly not one of Penny's best.

Wonderful book, gripping, moving & absorbing
I enjoyed this story immensely. It is very original whilst the ongoing stories of the key characters is satisfying.

Fun book substandard narrator
Another fun gamache story more complicated than usual which was a good thing. The current narrator is by miles worse than the previous one who unfortunately has now passed away. most of the villagers are not involved in this book which was a shame.

Bad editing or would be 4 1/2 stars
A great story with lots of twists (for me at least) but it is let down by some bad editing with repeated sentences.

Needs properly editing
This was a very good but not excellent story. I can only say not up to usual standard because bar one other book the whole series has been excellent. It progressed the family background theme well but I missed three pines as all the action takes place in Paris.
On half a dozen occasions passages were repeated that should have been edited out , I don't recall this happening once in all the other books

Absolutely engrossing!
Could not have enjoyed this book more and loved the narrator too. Louise Penny has a gift for storytelling and fleshing out each of her characters such that one can actually see them, hear them. The Ganache family dynamics along with the solving of a crime are completely engaging. Only Daniel Ganache’s character grated somewhat as more than once I felt he deserved a good slap for his childish behaviour. Other than that, I cannot wait for the next book.
