Summary

This audio edition is read by Nicholas Ralph, known for his role as James Herriot in the All Creatures Great and Small TV series.

** Now a major TV series on Channel 5 **

Training as an RAF pilot in the smoke and bustle of wartime London is a far cry from James Herriot’s day job as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales. And whilst he is keen to serve King and country, James cannot help but miss his life in Darrowby – despite frequent arguments between his colleagues Siegfried and Tristan, bad-tempered cattle, opinionated farmers and the continuing saga of Cedric the flatulent dog. But most of all he misses his wife Helen; pregnant with their first child. The question constantly hanging over them is – will he be going to war? And when will he get to go home?

Since they were first published, James Herriot’s memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Things Wise and Wonderful is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain’s best-loved authors.

Contains Vets Might Fly and Vet in a Spin.

Critic reviews

Herriot's enchanting tales of life in the Dales are deservedly classics. Full of extraordinary characters, animal and human, the books never fail to delight. (Amanda Owen)

Bulls with sunstroke, pigs on the run and a cake-eating Peke with a betting habit . . . I grew up reading James Herriot's book and I'm delighted that thirty years on they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then. (Kate Humble)

Marvellous performance!

I knew the books so I knew what to expect as far as the story goes but the performance here is just superb! It was in the first two audiobooks read by Nicholas Ralph too. He has a good voice and diction and he can make other voices and accents sound so natural, it is a rare skill. Thank you!

Excellent addition to the series

Wonderful stories from James Herriot and excellent narration from Nicholas Ralph, as always. A few sad and tragic tales in this book…more so than usual, or maybe I just noticed them because I love my dogs so much and live in fear of losing them. However, thankfully there were the usual upbeat and humorous episodes as well, and Tristan’s antics always raise a smile. Can’t wait to download the next one.

Wonderful story telling

Warm, humorous, heartwarming tales. Looked forward to listening whenever I could, whilst walking my dog or driving. Read all books in series twice over the years but audio added another dimension again. Great stuff.

Brilliant

Unable to stop listening. Totally immersed in this book, more so than the previous one - found myself switching from laughing out loud, to holding my breath in anticipation. Nicholas Ralph brilliantly brings the characters to life. Can’t wait for the 4th in this series. More TV series too please!

Perfect listening

Familiar stories brought to life by being read in the perfect voice , or should I say voices as he is so versatile

One of the best audiobooks I have ever heard

The narrator is honestly fabulous, doing accents, mannerisms, etc. He does the animal noises, the human giggles, the sounds of exasperation and the squeals of mirth. Nicholas Ralph can also convey sadness, desperation, disappointment and glee through his voice - no mean feat.

I would happily (and swiftly) download anything else Ralph narrates. This is one of the best audiobook series I've ever had the pleasure of listening to (I've listened to 1, 2 and 3 in the series) and can't recommend it enough.
