'His heart racing, Henry took a step towards the enemy line. A shape loomed towards him in the darkness....'

From the soaring heights of an aeroplane cockpit to the desperate depths of the muddy trenches, we are plunged first-hand into a war unlike any other. Amid the clash of empires, the future of the world hangs in the balance....

The Adventures in Time series brings the past alive for 21st-century children. These stories are every bit as exciting as those of Harry Potter or Matilda Wormwood. The only difference is they actually happened....

well told

This was great, shame it's for kids and so it was told with gusto. I'd have liked it a bit more adult.

Excellent

This is such an excellent book. It draws the listener in with good storytelling, painting vivid images of historical events. Both my 10 year old and I were left wanting more after every chapter. The narrator has a nice voice and is easy to listen to. Highly recommend!

Fabulous book

History by storytelling is a wonderful idea and very welcome: perfect for children, just as interesting for adults.

People we could have known

It’s not a history sof grand military strategy, distant dusty and elderly politicians or feudal overlords, it’s about our children, brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers. Despite the stupidity and tragedy of the conflict Sandbrook brings the time alive through the actions of the people he writes about. Often acts of great courage and compassion are dismissed by those who make great efforts and sacrifices for their fellows, often ordinary people, for whom they say when lauded that it is just what they are there for. Then Sandbrook notes how old they were. It’s hard not to cry through most of it. It seems so long ago, but it’s not really.
