Summary

Forty years is a long time to be away. Travelling on foot and by motorbike, Nick Adams discovers that while many things have changed, the things he loved - the hills, the pubs, the back roads and yes, even the weather - are undiminished.

Join Nick as he hikes the length of Wales, hitting all the high spots. Then follow him up the spine of England on the Pennine Way, through brutal February weather. On his third trip, circumstances conspire against him. The original plan was to walk from Chepstow all the way to the Lake District. It didn’t quite work out that way. Lastly, follow Nick across the North York Moors at night, then on across the country to the Cumbria coast.

As if the snow, rain, and endless miles weren’t enough while hiking, jump on the back of the motorbike and ride from Scotland to Devon via Norfolk, dodging hypothermia, then through the Lakes, the Pennines, and Wales.

Nick’s idea of a good time seems to involve bad weather, difficult terrain, stealth camping, and innumerable pubs. This is one man’s view of a country he loves, told in a simple, engaging style.

Come along for the ride.

Good story but decidedly dodgy pronunciation.

An enjoyable book well narrated on the whole. The terrible pronunciation of Welsh place names in the first chapter was disappointing though and for me it detracted from the story. Also the author should have stayed away from trying to do accents while narrating because almost everyone sounded Australian. I like listening to authors narrating their own books, especially travel literature because it feels more like you're on the journey with them. A bit more research on Welsh pronunciation and I've have given 5 stars.

Just a nice ride out with a decent and self reliant long distance rider

Well written , descriptive of his rides , a nice bloke who you could ride a few miles with , no drama just a love of wide open roads and nature . And the guy knows his mechanics , no problem too bad that some wire and a bag of spanner’s won’t sort out 😂

So relatable, this guy is a quiet superman.

I cannot believe that this guy lives like a bushman in such harsh conditions. He is right that in the uk you are never too far from help but I have exerted myself less than this man and I am 20 years his junior.
A good role model.
