About this listen

SOON TO BE A MAJOR TV SERIES

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R.R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

A century before A GAME OF THRONES, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne there was Dunk and Egg.

A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals – in stature if not experience. Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg – whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king. Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg; as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, and featuring more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni, one of the finest fantasy artists of our time, this beautiful volume will transport readers to the world of the Seven Kingdoms in an age of bygone chivalry.

Critic reviews

Praise for A Song of Ice and Fire: "In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best...tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting." ( Time Magazine)
"An absorbing, exciting read...Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages." ( The Times)
"The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." ( Guardian)
"Colossal, staggering.... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world.... The writing is always powerful...." ( SFX)

Superb...

Wasn't sure what to expect, having been a big fan of the Game of Thrones series, but this just really surprised and really impressed.
Written in the typical George R. R. Martin way, the story of Dunk and Egg is another epic adventure, which holds true the history of the various houses which made their names in GOT.
This slots in around 100 years prior to A Game of Thrones, and I enjoyed learning about how many of the main characters in the main series came to pass. This book is perfectly interwoven into the history and legend of the Seven Kingdoms.
Wonderful narration from Harry Lloyd.

Words are wind

When I first saw this book was released, I kind of thought: come on George this is not getting the next ice and fire story out. Why are you getting distracted with this?

But I really enjoyed it and it was a nice distraction from Game of Thrones, as I'm sure it was for George. Lot's of the usual kinds of
intrigue, plots and villains. Castles, feasts and fights- and like all GoT books-, it always makes me hungry. Buttered capons and a flaggon of wine- Don't mind if I do!

So thanks George, but please finish Winds of Winter now.

Disappointed.

A little disappointed here story only gets game of thrones in my opinion towards the last third up until then its an average fantasy book.
All fans must listen and read because its martin but not five stars.
Preferred last narrator of the audiobooks. This one not as gritty.

Oh it finished.

Grand read. Really started to go somewhere and it finished. Only follows two protagonists, and only told through the eyes of one of them. Not to complex, easy enjoyable read.

Well read, though at times when 'mumbling' it was too soft had to turn it right up, then he would speak normally and it would be too loud.

Would like to know more of their adventures.

not really a prequel

an easier listen than the main series, a good tale in its own right, but not really an introduction as a prequel

Love the book , narrator not so much.

Love GOT and the story itself although the narrator isnt my favourite as some of his voices annoy me .
