Summary

Award-winning historian Simon Schama completes his monumental three-volume history of Britain, which accompanies the acclaimed television epic. In The Fate of Empire, Schama illuminates the period of British history from 1770-2000 through a variety of historical themes, including the advance of technology and industry, women's increasing role in society and the burgeoning British Empire, and key British characters such as Wordsworth, Burke, Queen Victoria, Churchill, and George Orwell. Lesser-known lives are also illuminated, such as Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first woman doctor; 'Mother' Mary Seacole, the forgotten Caribbean nurse and heroine of the Crimea War; and Dadabhai Naoroji, who, in 1890, became the first Asian MP.

Massively worth the time

I loved it. Didn’t agree with all of it but if you only want your own ideas confirmed why bother reading?

Patchy coverage.

Overall the 3 version history was OK. Patchy coverage in some eras and concentrating on minor events and almost ignoring some far more important people and events. Taken as a whole should also be read/listened to with other histories to enable you to arrive at a more comprehensive and balanced view.

great history, perfect reader

I like history, but it has to be the right person reading, Timothy West is perfect, and Schama is a great historian.

Thought provoking

Very thought provoking. Encourages the reader to reapraise much of what was taught in history lessons at school.

Extremely interesting and well written

Not withstanding the other great books, I enjoyed this one more than the other two in Simon Schama's trilogy on British history. This may, in part be the familiarity with the times and the material. Non the less, it was most informative and enjoyable. In short, I thoroughly recommend it book as a vehicle for sorting many of the grey areas in modern British history.

A brilliant read

I loved all 3 volumee of Scharma’s history. Timothy West read beautifully and the deprivation seemed balance on honest: We should make compulsory reading for all Brits.
