Whatever walks there, no longer walks alone . . .
Playwright Holly Sherwin is close to her big break. Having received a grant to develop her new play, all she needs is time and space to bring her vision to life. Then on a weekend away, she stumbles upon Hill House - an ornate if crumbling gothic mansion, near-hidden outside a small town.
Soon Holly's troupe of actors - each with ghosts of their own - arrive at Hill House for a creative retreat. But before long they find themselves at odds not just with one another, but with the house itself.
For something has been waiting patiently in Hill House all these years.
Something no longer content to walk alone.

“Hill House watches, Hill House waits.”
A beautifully built story with lots nods to the original Shirley Jackson novel. With the house as the constant, the largest of the characters, processing each of the remaining characters through their own, very personal, undoings. The house magnificently attracts them and repels them at the same time.
The narration is sublime; it’s such a pleasure to listen to. Elizabeth Hand and Carol Monda are such a wonderful pairing.

The Performance Shines
Huge fan of Hill House, and revisit it at least once a year, but this canon sequel felt a little flat and underwhelming in the face of such grand possibility. The characters felt a bit two dimensional in that it was quite difficult to discern if we were meant to root for them or their demise. There's an interesting story in the background here, but it feels like it's always happening "off page". The intriguing elements exist surrounding those living in the shadow of Hill House, who are relegated to plot-advancing doomsayers while those caught up in the actual haunting never seem to grab and stick.
However, worth a listen for die-hard fans and an absolute delight as an audio experience!

Hount
No better woman than Liz Hand to pen an official sequel of sorts to The Haunting Of Hill House. A laywright rents the hellish abode for a few weeks to work with her partner, her friend and an aging actress to workshop her new play. Stuff starts to happen, and the group finds itself both disturbed by the place but also energised by the work they're doing and elect to stay on, precipitating a tragic climax.
Atmospheric, spooky, well-written, great characterisation and full of nods to the original.

Scary story but slightly lacking
Overall I enjoyed this scary story, but felt some of the characters lacked depth and I didn’t particularly care about them. But it didn’t ruin the atmosphere that built up slowly towards a really quite terrifying ending.

Doesn’t quite deliver but some good scary moments!
I loved the original & thought this was an intriguing idea. The characters weren’t likeable or well-drawn enough for me to really care about them. There are some really lovely scary moments & images but what’s actually going on in the house is a bit disjointed & doesnt really all hang together well - like there’s a lot of different things going on when the action gets going but it all feels a bit messy. The performance was good.

Amazing narrator
Absolutely loved this. Excellent story, and excellent storytelling.
At times this gave genuine thrill of fear... I listened to the entire book over three days. Had I not been forced to do 'life' stuff... It would have been less.

Superb!!!
A truly excellent, spellbinding sequel to Shirley Jackson’s iconic original story. Hill House still watches and waits.

Different league to the original (sadly)
Narrator was excellent although not overly keen on the accompanying background effects. Characters are flat and two dimensional and the main character (the house) is undersold. disappointed given the stable this horse claims to be bred from...

A haunting return to hill house
Coming from a huge Shirley Jackson-/Hill House-fan; this hommage does the original justice. Eerie, haunting, gothic, perfect.
The narration is superb and audioeffects and excellent voice work really bring the story to life.

Good narrator makes the most of a poor book
If I say the most original thing about this book is having the house upside down on the cover you may get the general idea. If you enjoyed, or perhaps even revere, Shirley Jackson's flawed masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House, and in particular if you haven't read it yet, avoid this book. Carol Monda, on the other hand, is excellent.
