Summary
In his latest adventure Bruno, France's favourite country cop, investigates a long-buried war crime and faces a devastating flood that threatens the town he polices and the people he loves.
The long arm of history reaches into the present in Bruno's latest case when three sets of bones are discovered, buried deep in the woods outside the Dordogne town of St Denis. It appears that the remains have lain there since World War 2. Bruno must investigate who the bones belong to and whether their burial amounts to a war crime.
Bruno has other concerns too. After weeks of heavy autumn rain, the normally tranquil Dordogne river has risen to record levels, compromising the upriver dams that control the Vezere that flows through St Denis, bringing the threat of a devastating flood.
As ever, Bruno must rely on his wits, tenacity and people skills to ensure that past wrongs don't result in present violence, and to keep his little town and its inhabitants safe from harm.

Excellent narration
Another brilliant book by Martin Walker. Some of the facts and figures bewildered me but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. The narration by Peter Noble was superb as usual

Revisiting old friends
Through this story i enjoyed catching up with old friends and once again felt the warmth of the community of St Denis. These books are a delight to be savoured by even the least of Francophiles, but I did find this one a little less gripping than some. It almost felt as though a cracking short story had been extended to a novel. But I will still look forward to the next one!

It’s a great series
I love the Bruno Chief of Police books and couldn’t wait for this to be released. I feel like I know all the characters personally by now. The only trouble is I finished it quickly and have to wait until Martin Walker can write the next. Aah!!

Another Bruno-mystery
As always, a Bruno-story is filled with evryday sub-stories of his life
This Tine there were no international spy-story so hhe Brigadier only had a very small part of what happened. And Isabelle an even smallere part.
I guess Brunos lovelife is getting sortes out as Florence and her children are moving in with him as he eecovers. Although that is just temporary, followers of Bruno will probably have had similar thoughts along the way as he always returnere to her and her children (who he almost acts as a devoted father towards).
of course there are the allost manditory international mystery - this time caused by Nazi and Italian bodies.
And there is also a major flood crisis in St Denis that he needs to take care of as well as having a new assistent at the merri - all this while being seconded to the fisc

Worth the wait
Seemed to be waiting a long while for this one, Very good but not the best in the series, missed the meal preparations that usually accompany these stories.

A really enjoyable reacquaintance with familiar characters celebrating a familiar setting.
I enjoyed the listen very much. The characters are strong and familiar. Martin’s character creations are spot on. The new administrator is a good addition who I hope we see more of. The new police computer geek existing on black coffee will surely feature again. Rod, Amelie, Crimson, and the Baron make welcome cameos. The General adds some drama and the Mayor demonstrates his smooth political skills as ever. Hector got a mention and the heroic Balzac featured if not his shared owner except in a curt phone call with Bruno. Is life in
Paris really so much better!
A few questions are left hanging. Abbie was initially intriguing and on the whole I found her to be suspicious. Perhaps she has run her course as a character but could she return? Who exactly are the Birches? And of course who will make an honest man of Bruno? This time the plot was less developed or demanding than in previous books but the setting and characters more than compensate. I would have liked more of Pamela, Florence, and of course Isabelle and Bruno’s cosy dinner parties at the Riding School. Bruno’s tangled love life is not yet resolved. Am I rooting
Florence or Isabelle? Or are the benefits of friendship with Pamela the best option. Bruno’s rugby days are over but Marta can rustle up an after hours cheese toastie so can probably sort out the rugby team too! The research and description of the flooding scenes and the technical details were amazingly good. Martin and Peter - please get cracking with the next instalment!

Bruno comes to the rescue again.
As usual never a dull moment in this fast paced novel. I love the many themes ie World War 11 Crypto currency archeology etc. all come to life in the story.
Don't get me started on the gastronomic delights!

Too much history
Too much history and not enough story for me. I love Bruno and the clan but this was a very thin tale with not much happening until the end. Feels like Martin Walker is getting tired of Bruno. I hope not.

plenty of action
these books are not the usual interrogation style of police procedurals which bore me. I love the history and the descriptions of the area and also the characters who you cannot wait to meet again.
